gains with an open element?

I was wondering what kind of gains could be made by adding and open element. I've read (how to build horsepower) that sometimes open elements are a waste of money. I'll probably get a 14" K&N in about a 2" (or as high as I can go with my stock hood.
thanks for the help

Man I don't know about actual hp gains, but the throttle response and actual overall power after you install the open element air cleaner is just incredible. I say go for it. It was the best bang for my buck, I'd have to say.

Under stock hood you should be able to get 14x3 unless you have a bunch of spacers and fubar motor mounts.

Go for it! I felt the difference. It looks better and sounds better. Some people say that a 14 x 3 paper element is the same as the K&N as for as performance goes. I have a 14 X 3 Flat Base.

macksik7,
This is probably what you have on your car now...it is horrible. If you don't know what it looks like its that ugly black lid looking thing with the hose attached to it (getting technical here guys).

You want something like this, it sucks massive amounts of air and gives the car tremendous gains in throttle response not to mention a evil hiss comes out of your engine compartment especially under hard acceleration.

You will learn quickly, that the restriction of air flow is the enemy to the TBI. This is one of the best ways to improve the flow.

If you want great instal instructions go to snflupigus' webpage. He made it so much easier to install mine so that damned check engine light wouldn't go one.

Now all he has to do is make a text version so people can print it out. My laser printer printed a crappy looking version because it is a gif file. You hear me snflupigus.
