Hey dude, check out the tech articles. And yes it can be doneunder 600.You can go to a junkyard and pick a carb, distr.,and intake man.for that price or cheaper. You have to change distributors because of the computerand may need a new fuel pump or just a regulator. You will lose gas milage, have cold start ups(depends on where you live),and more tuning to get your mixture right.

it will cost you money and cost you performance. The problem with a stock LO3 is not the TBI, but is the heads, intake and cam. A carb might be a good choice if you have a 300+hp engine, but you TBI is jsut fine for your 305.

So what would be cheaper.......getting new heads, cam, intake and installing them......or should i buy a used 350 and rebuild it and pay someone to install it.......right now i dont want to build the ultimate street machine but just want to get into the 250 hp range....im only 17 and have a part time in my dads body shop so finance is an issue but i can save up and do chunks at a time

If you shop around and do a little research, both ideas are great.you can shop around for heads, cam, ect.or build a mild 350.A 305 has potintal but is about 45 cubic inches smaller than a 350.A 350 has alot more potinetal and would be cheaper in the long run.you can get an easy 300 horses with a cam, heads, and exuast.I would go with a 350.
Thats my 2 cents.

I would stay with TBI and either mod your 305 or get a 350. A good stock 350 with a halfway decent cam will produce 275-300 all day long and with the TBI you'll have a much more streetable car. To put it shortly, there really isn't a carb you could buy that you could put on a stock L03 that would noticably improve performance.

step one: disconnect negative battery ground(standard first instruction)
step two: disconnect brain from anything that resembles technology
step three: drag nuckles on floor
step four: install carb

you are gonna lose a ton of gas mileage, driveability, and perfromance potential.

lol, Tim I like that step 3
Step 3 part b)buy carb
Step 3 part c)rebuild carb often (usually every other oil change )
Step 4 part b)tune carb with nose and eyes, ex. of rich condition "ah ****, I can't see, I can't stop crying" ex. of lean condition "are the headers suposed to be bright orange?"
Step 5:
get beat by Tim who runs 14.2 with STOCK cam and STOCK TB!!!!! hahaha
Really though, there is no reason a carb will make more performance if you do it right. Why would you want to get rid of a simple EFI system for a complex mechanical setup when they make the same power when done right? Do a search for TBI advantages and you'll see lots of reasons why TBI rocks.
