Cam Swap

Easier to change cams by pulling the engine or by trying to do it with the engine in. Have the equipment to pull the engine but all the wires and sensors are scary. All I would be doing is changing cam, intake, and valve springs.

Its not too bad to do it in the car. You do have to take off alot of stuff though. If you don't want to worry about the sensors this is the way to go.

About how long of a job is this, to do a cam swap with the engine in the car? I have general knowledge and the guy I would be doing it with has built engines and all of that good stuff? Thanks, Brady

I just installed a LT1 cam last weekend. It took me about 15 hours, but I was installing a new intake manifold also (took some time switching things over).I was able to do it with out completly removing the air cond. condenser.I loosened the clamp that holds the steel lines to the frame and rotated it up out of the way.(Pablo was right)
Good luck
Dave

I used my stock springs. The 95-97 LT1 cam has .447 and .459 lift.I consider .450 lift about max for stock springs.I haven't had any valve float or coil bind. Its running fine with a stock chip(no trouble codes). It idles smooth, and it will now pull to 6000RPM.It lost alittle low end power but I expected that.It acually hooks up alittle better now.I'm sure a custom chip would help some but it runs respectable the way it is.

I guess it depends on what you are building whether or not you want to change springs.I have 92000 miles on my engine(not exactly new).I am just trying to have a little more fun on the street.I'll probably never get it to a strip.I wont put a dime in my junk LO3 heads. When I've used up this motor I will put my money in a 350.As I said before the coils are not binding and the small valves are not floating.I'm shifting at 5500RPM.Is the boogey man going to get me or what?I was changing the intake manifold anyway so I bought a used cam for cheap and installed it with my used roller lifters.I got a nice bang for the buck out of the cam change. The reason I am responding in depth like this is because I know from reading this board that there are alot of people out there looking for some cheap HP for a well used motor.I've built some hot 350's ,but I cant see putting to much money in a LO3.Some may want to prove something, and thats ok.I respect that. But if you are like me and just want more power under your right foot there are cheaper ways to go rather then trying to build a killer LO3.
Have a nice weekend.
Dave
