Cam Performance?

My 91 Formula has a 305 TBI stock motor. I would like to know what would be a good choice for a higher performance cam, without going supercrazy . Can any give me a suggestion or two?

Also I have a hooker catback set-up with a single cat, what headers would go best with keeping the emissions?

Re: Cam Performance?

How good are you at chip tuning? This will really govern how far you can go.

Re: Cam Performance?

Nope, well there is tbichips.com.....but do a quick search on here or look at the current thread on what the concensus is of his "skills" on the boards. In a nut shell tuning an engine is WAY too complicated to do over the internet basd on a list of mods. If you really want to play with TBI you need to learn to burn your own chips, check out the "free tune" sticky at the top of the page.

If you don't tune your own chips, you might get away with an LT1 cam. Some guys have had problems with stalling and crappy mileage untill they retuned. You'll only relize about 1/2 the power of the cam without tuning.

Re: Cam Performance?

No different than a LT1 cam and a stock chip. The only thing he changes is WOT stuff and some constants. It's the low RPM tuning that causes all the drivability problems.

For headers, go with Hooker 2055's.

Re: Cam Performance?

For 3" cat back, the hookers are a good way to go, although you cant change the spark plugs with them on the motor. Edelbrock also makes headers that allow you to have a little more room, but their doughnut gaskets are complete junk. Theyre made of paper and metal foil rather then compressed metal foil like they should, so they frequently fail. On the flip side, the ball joints on the hookers leak because teh angles are all wrong and the y-pipe is tin foil. Pick your poison...

I can change the plugs on mine. Just can't use stock length plugs.
