ATTN: Whoever has done cam swaps in car...

On a 92 firebird, would the A/C system have to be purged, or is there enough room to get the new cam in without having to have the A/C system flushed...
?

Also, Is 109 lobe sep. too low? I can get a cam that is 196/206 and .431/.451 but it has a 109 lobe sep. The guy says its a new LT1 cam with a hardened fuel pump lobe on it...

would this work, or should I just go to advanced auto parts and pick up a diff. cam..?

Hey, Z, what did you notice from the LT1 cam installation? Did you change anything (lifters, etc). Most people I know just changed the timing chain.

LT1 cam installed yseterday. I had the a/c purged to do it. Yes a new roller timing chain and gear set went in then too. We reused my stock lifters and springs. I recommend discharging the a/c. The lines are hard plumbed to the condenser. It was recommended not to try and just move the condenser aside. I've had zero problems with my a/c in 11 years and I intend to keep it that way. It still had 2.5 lbs of freon in the system when it was sucked out.

92,

A few things:

First, there is no factory LT1 cam with those specifications. Of the seven factory cam grinds for that family of engines, your specs don't match up:

Second, you ECM is not going to like that LSA. Try to keep it around 112° at a minimum. That should be very easy with a roller cam and lifters.

Third, if you can "pick up" a cam of your chosing at Advance Auto Parts, I'm gonna be very surprised. I couldn't even get a degree wheel there - they were confused when I even asked them...

They do have thirty six different kinds of air fresheners, though.

Oh, yeah. You can install the cam by very carefully moving the AC condenser out of the way. Watch the lines very carefully to avoid any sharp bends or stress points.

Looks like the RamJet 350 (1.6 roller rockers) and HT383cid (1.5 stamped ZZ4 rockers) cam to me, $150 from any GMPP dealer. Not an LT1 cam. nice cam for open loop EFI like the RAM JET and would probably work ok in closed-loop tbi.

Actually, I found a different guy with a 94 LT1 camaro cam.. I'm gonna buy from him..

and the only reason I mentioned advanced was because on another post, a guy listed specs and said advanced had a cam like that for $76.99... for that price, I would have bought a new cam.. I called them and they didn't even understand what I was asking for..

Keep in mind any new cam you see for a really cheap price like that is more than likely going to be a flat-tappet cam, and wont work with 88-92 TBI roller engines. You need to get a cam that specifically states "87+ hydraulic roller cam". Most of them are in the $200+ range, but you can find some GM cams for <$200.
