A I R on exhaust
A I R on exhaust
I disconnected the tube leading to the exhaust manifold; I've been hearing somewhere that if you take out that smog system then it wont hurt anything put your emissions, and you wont feel a gain.
Anyway, i disconnect it, turned on the motor and nothing unusual.. plugged the hose(I could feel air sucking in) and heard a grinding noise. of course I let go and everything was fine. so I decide to drive around to see if I noticed anything, First I filled up my tank... when I got to 30+ miles My gauge was at 3/4.. which is not normal for me... well I just past 100+ miles and Im pretty close to 1/2 a tank.
So does it sound like Im getting less MPG??Ill know for sure when I empty the tank but I was wandering some of your thoughts on disabling the A I R system(is this the same thing as the Smog stuff)
Also when I step on it.. there a hesitation, put it does seem to pull a lil bit harder?
Is this my imagination or is there really a gain.

Imagination, you don't get any gain from taking off ur A.I.R. System. If I was you, I would just put it right back on.

i did not take mine off for hp i took mine off for looks.
but really i did not notice any thing really but i sure cleaned up my exahust and i dont have a cat so i guess the smog stuff really did not help, o and if you dont gut your cat or put a pipe in will your cat clog up because it doesnot have the smog suff?, its just something i heard before.

The air pump is there to help warm up the cat converter after a cold start and to basically get rid of any unburnt fuel. It's injecting oxygen rich air into the exhaust where VERY hot gas and hydrocarbons are exiting the combustion chamber. They combust in the exhaust manifold and help control emissions. I don't have the pump on my car and I just ripped off all the tubes. I have SLP headers and a 330hp 350 and I squeeked by emissions with just a cat and a muffler running at 220 degrees. As far as performance, zilch gain. Maybe 1hp but it shouldn't be noticable. If you want noticable, leave your a/c on.
If you want to get rid of it go for it, it shouldn't hurt your gas milage, it should help if anything. There is a tech article about how to remove the pump (really easy) and install a shorter belt. I can probably get pictures on my site soon.
