Bunch of Problems

Some of my cars problems have pushed me to the point of rant, so here goes. Whenever their are heavy rains, my cars interior leaks. When it leaks really bad, the car will not start the first time I try to start it. I can usually go out an hour later so and it will start up fine, and it only happens when it rains, so I don't think its the starter. Also, my gas milage is kinda sucky, 14.5 mpg at best. It also smells like it is running very rich all time. O2 sensor? Ocassionly when I start it, the idle isn't steady and it will die unless I floor it. I think this is because the fuel filter and injectors are dirty.? My car has 160 thousand miles on it, and I wouldn't be the least bit suprised to find that all of the parts mentioned above are original. It will ocassionly throw a code but need to check and see what it is. Sometime after Xmas I plan throwing a tune up ( and a heavily modified Crossfire setup ) on the car. What do you guys think I should replace? Thanks, sorry about the long post.

First off, Where are the leaks coming in at... If you can't see it. Get a hose and have someone sray the car while you sit in it. If it's not in the interior your worried about. Check under the hood after spraying that down. There has to be some place that the water is getting in. Im not too sure on how CFI is, but moister in the air shouldn't be that much of an issue where you have to let it dry up to start the car.

Get a tune up!!!

After rereading, I noticed you have a rag top Duct tape maybe

I would look at the ignition system. Mainly wires, cap and rotor (and all the connections to the various parts relating to the ignition system).

Not starting after a heavy rain... plugs wires are the prime suspect for this.

Not getting good gas mileage (and not starting whewn wet) adds to the poor ignition performance and smelling raw fuel adds to it even more. (Weak ignition along with moisture adds to VERY hard starting!)

Sorry, I didn't quite explain it enough, it doesn't try to start, it won't do anything. The starter doesn't even click, but the lights are just as bright as ever, so the battery is fine. I think it has something to do with all my interior ( and probably some wiring ) getting drenched in heavy downpours. Everything behind the front seats gets wet. But I do agree, my ignition is worn out and weak, it is on my replace list. Along with the exhaust, intake, cam, rear end... .

Next time the starter won't function, crawl underneath and bang on the starter itself, and on the solenoid (just above it), with a small hammer or with the tire iron.

If the car reliably starts after banging on the starter or solenoid, that's likely to be the problem. It's probably just the solenoid, but it's easier and more reliable to just replace both at the same time.

If it only happens after it rains, you are getting moisture somewhere in your charging system. Check your battery leads, distributor cap and rotor, and spark plug wires for cracks and corrosion.

With that many miles on your car you should definitely get these parts replaced.

A tune-up and new O2 sensor is also much needed.

Ok, it did to me again today. It has made me miss class two days in a row now. I popped the hood looked and the cap, plug wires, the starter, battery, they were all dry! My carpet and back seat were wet because it rained last night. What is even more strange is that my dad had moved it only an hour or two before, and it started right up! I am almost frustrated to the point of selling this damn car and getting a hardtop.

Hehe just got one . Not so pi$$ed anymore, keepin' the car. Didn't bang the starter, don't thinks its the problem. Goin' to wire in an underhood start switch and see if that helps. That will even come in handy when I'm workin' on it .
