planning on switching from stock carb to tbi
so i used the search function and i want to get my facts straight. i have an 87 z28 camaro with the 4 barrel 305HO and i want to do a tbi swap. what i want to do is just grab the intake manifold with the throttle body in tack along with the distributer, wiring harness, computer, all the sensors, and fuel pump. oh yeah ill aslo grab all of the emmission garbage since i live in CA...oh yay smog ***** -rolls eyes- ....so what i need to know. the intake will bolt right to the heads right? will the wiring harness just plug in place of the carb's harness? or will i need to splice wires. any thing else i need? i didnt find any writups so does anybody have a good one?
-joe
p.s. dont know if it makes any difference but it has an automatic....pretty sure its the 700r4

Cool.
Not sure about the wiring harness. I would think that the firewall connectors would be similar. Best bet is to research the pin outs. Just find a donor car and pull all the wiring from that goes from the ecm, out near the fender and all the way to the fire wall connector. If the firewall connectors are not pinned out the same, then I would think either changing the pins or taking the entire electrical wiring would be necessary. Since the switches are all in the same place (that is with a Camaro, birds would be different... power mirrors and headlight switches come to mind) estimate a good couple days of work to switch out all the wring. Not too hard, just a bit of time.
Research about the speed sensor (VSS). Some cars have electronic and some have mechanical. Make it easy and get a donor that is the same as yours. Look at the trans and see if you have a cable or wires.
Manifold will line right up. I suggest getting a good, non air gap manifold (edelbrock performer... that will work with CA emissions) and get an adapter plate. Stock manifolds will work, but regular sbc manifolds are cheap.
I got some part stock tbi as well. i just installed a L31 350 with all new top end.

Re: planning on switching from stock carb to tbi
Go to sleep! j/k. Library or GM dealership. There have got to be someone online here that has them or has done what your doing. Hopefully some others will chime in. I know someone here put together a disk with alot of info in it. Was only $20 or so, but worth much more.
I think my haynes manual had some info on this. I check when I get back home next week.

Re: planning on switching from stock carb to tbi
The best and easiest approach is to have a complete donor, which is not always possible. With respect to smog test (we both live in kalifornia) you'll have to go to referee station and declare that you did a complete engine swap from 87 or later passenger car! You can not swap in truck based TBI system (against the rules by eco-*****). Look for any TB equipped V8 camaro or B-body (305 preferred, but 350 can be modified easily).
Get a complete harness, ECM sensors, TB, (i.e everything that's connected to harness ) and transplant onto your HO. You'll need FP upgrade. The key to this is planning...
If your HO is in good shape (near stock) - transplant should yield fuel consumption improvement and drivability.

Re: planning on switching from stock carb to tbi
FP = Fuel Pump
Carb needs about 4 to 6 PSI of fuel pressure to be happy. TB requires 12 to 15PSI, and TPI 40 to 48 PSI. There are many pumps - be careful how you select one.
No problem.

Re: planning on switching from stock carb to tbi
ooh lmao sorry. i knew about the puel pump already. almost did a fuel injection swap on the wrangler i owned before my camaro. only reason why i didnt do it was because everything kept breaking on it. my sister killed a set of spider gears, i killed a transmission due to burn outs, snapped a driveshaft yoke, all sorts of fun things. but yeah. this is definately going to be a fun swap.

See Brian at tbichips.com He's got a great fuel pump at a great price. Been running mine for a while now and very happy!!
He will do custom chips as well. HIGHLY RECOMMEND HIM!

Re: planning on switching from stock carb to tbi
There is no bulkhead connector for the ECM harness.
GM used a gromit to pass through wiring harness through the firewall. Take a look at the following two photos of a TBI harness removed from '90 B-Body. Third photo shows ECM to harness connector.
CCC and TBI system shared a lot of circuits between each other. Perhaps it is possible to re-pin existing harness from CCC to TBI. However, IIRC CCC did not use IAC which requires a four wire circuit! So in the end swapping a harness is probably simpler.
Take a look at your ECM and post part number - it should be a 7 digit number starting with 122xxxx.
For your TBI conversion you can use any suitable passenger car ECM for example 1228746 or later 16136965.

are the connectors where each wiring harness plugs into the dash harness the same?

Re: planning on switching from stock carb to tbi
I am not sure - There are probably minor differences which can be readily resolved by comparing the two harnesses side by side. Underdash connections include ALDL I/O connector, SES light, P/N switch and ignition hot. That should be it.

So, which ECM do you have (for your CCC) and which one are planning to use with TBI??
