Re: Upgradeing Stock Intake manifold and TBI
The stock TBI and intake manifold are not really responsible for the 170hp.
Its exhaust, tune, cam and heads that choke it down.
Unfortunately fuel delivery is also proportioned to the stock requirements, so wen you get past 200hp you will need a higer pressure fuel pump and an AFPR (adjustable fuel pressure regulator).
Air intake is junk too.
Stock TB can handle 280hp, stock fuel injectors up to 300hp according to the fuel pressure, dont know about the intake manifold but i have heard of many 250hp engines with that manifold.
Best would be to start with an EBL and learn how to tune since every effective mod will require recalibrating.
There are many treads that cover this information.

Here you go.
https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/tbi/...-synopsis.html
I would skip out on the "double humps". Old tech. Plus I would even skip on the Darts as well at this point until you get familiar with the tuning side of things. To me those heads are little overkill.
For an intake you have a few options. Edelbrock 3704 TBI manifold, GM Vortec TBI Manifold for Vortec Heads or any carb manifold with an adapter.

Re: Upgradeing Stock Intake manifold and TBI
No. Vortec heads and manifolds go together and only together. But you're gonna be better off saving your money and doing a whole package because the stock TBI cams are really limiting too. Spend a bunch of time on this site and read up on what people suggest. If you haven't done it yet get an exhaust system first before you even think about anything else.
But first and foremost just read all you can stand on here and then some more.

Re: Upgradeing Stock Intake manifold and TBI
so quick to give up

You could get vortec heads, intake, and a nice cam for about 500-600$.
Thats probably what your 350 block will run you after you get it cleaned. Assuming that it will be used.
And the 305 isnt a piece, it will out last a 350 any day

No its not a piece, rather its just a little more to work on than a 350. A modded emissions legal 305 TBI will make about 210rwhp on the dyno. A good exhaust system from the headers back, 255lph fuel pump, AFPR, Ultimate TBI mods or Holley TBI and Pro-Jection manifold, EBL, and a tune will get you there for around $3000. If you port & polish the heads and intake, I'd bet you could make even more and still be emissions legal.

350 + mods = 3000$
305 (that you already own) + mods = 3000$
when you see that 350 in the rear view mirror , priceless.
Not to mention a lot of the 305 parts will bolt onto the 350.

Re: Upgradeing Stock Intake manifold and TBI
A reasonable first question is how many miles on the 305?
I.E. if its old & tired, be very careful about any mods that
wouldn't be compatible with an engine upgrade. Good flowing
exhaust - yes, TBI & manifold updrades -- yes, EBL & tuning
skills -- definitely. Heads & cam -- lots of work.
Unless you're just a 305 fanatic, (& there are some very successul
ones on this sight), the cost of renewing the 305 short block,
versus a comparable 350 is negligible, and will be a much better
starting point for cam/heads. And if you take your time, plan
and execute the build, while having the car servicable, the end
results will be well worth it.
Good luck,
kk

Re: Upgradeing Stock Intake manifold and TBI
I'm in the same situation. I have an 89 firebird that I am at a point to where I have to do something. I want to get the car to around 300 hp. I have read about people bolting on new carb, intake, heads and exhaust to get those numbers from the 305. Like you I am on a budget, I have 8 cars that I drive and work on.
So does anyone have any new information on swaps or new technology to enhance these motors?

Re: Upgradeing Stock Intake manifold and TBI
there is a lot more you can do to make it faster. First, do headers, full exhaust, high flow cats, free tbi/etc mods. See how you like the car. Then do some 3.73 rear end gears. With the mods I have just listed, an underdrive crank pulley, 1.6 stamped steel rockers and some suspension parts I went 14.791 in the quarter mile without having to really touch the engine, not bad considering it ran mid-low 16s stock. Plus, if you still don't like the 305 then all the parts you just installed will swap right over to the 350. Or you can mod the car even more like an edelbrock TBI/carb intake manifold and a torque converter. I was on this board just about every day for 6 years (until I got my 02 Z28) and unless you are going to be a hardcore TBI chip tuner stay away from upgrading to a 350 unless you plan on keeping the internals (cam/head, etc) of the 350 stock and use a caprice cop car chip.

Re: Upgradeing Stock Intake manifold and TBI
I want to keep the car close to stock. I am keeping the 305 and I have already upgraded the suspension but I am planning on putting a new intake and the 600cfm TBI and new header to tail exhaust. My next decision is whether to port the heads or replace them and whether I want to upgrade the distributor and what I am going to do to the ECM. Any suggestions?

headers, high flow cat, hooker catback
full tune up (fuel filter, plugs, wires, cap, rotor, coil, etc)
Full suspension (torque arm, LCAs, PHB, sway bars, shocks, springs, STB, SFC)
3.73s with LS1 takeoff posi unit
underdrive crank pulley and 1.6 stamped rocker arms
intake manifold and 2400 stall coverter
went 14.791 before the intake manifold and converter and never brought it to the track with the new mods, then got rid of car.
That should take you a few years and get you well acquainted with the L03, then you can figure out whether or not you want to get into ECM/EPROM tuning and start touching the heads and cam. I got my car when I was 17 and was sure what i wanted to do with my car, LT1 cam, 454 TBI, TPI heads, etc. but those take a lot of work, a lot of tuning and a lot of time where as the mods above are well worth it and arent too hard to install. You can go fast on stock heads and stock cam, fast meaning way faster than stock. Not like you are going to keep up with my 02 Z28 but it will still be a fun car to drive.
