performance on a 92 rs tbi

i bought a 92 rs with a 305 tbi about 8 months back. i thought it was quick then now im bord. iv put about a grand into it fixing problems and i know my electic has some trouble. im looking to give it a little more power im tired of rice rockets taking me off the line. im about to buy a HEI distritbuter from my friend and redo the spark plugs and wires to mds and posibely flowtech heads also. the car already has an edelbrock cat back on it and im trying to avoid that all exzaust ***** sound

im going to school for auto tech starting next month and ocme september ill b abel to rebuild the car from teh gound up and drop a 350 init so i dont want to pour alot of money in it now just enough to give me a little more engine rumble. any help would be greatly apprecated.
i love third gens mines just not what it should b

I'll tell you what man, you want cheap easy performance out of a TBI?
1. switch to an open air filter element (Mr Gasket non-drop 14" works very well)
2.Go to the home page on TGO and under the tech articles you will see "ultimate TBI" and "ultimate TBI 2"
3.Exhaust!
4. A stronger ignition system wouldn't hurt.

change the rear gear ratio to 4:11 , you wont believe how fast it seems !!

that would probably be a good upgrade down the road when you swap the 350 in, but say goodbye to fuel economy.

how do i go about changes the gear ratio?
i already had the open elemnt on it and i dident like it. it seamed like it let 2 much air in and as far as exzaust i have an edlebrok on it that came with the car

by a gm performance ring and pinion and rear differential gasket , then take it to a mechanic that can set it up .

if you're shooting for decent power, the 305 as well as your future 350 will benefit from a high-flow exhaust system, including headers, cat and back.
that and the gearing might be good mods to look into. if you will be using TBI on the 350 as well, you'd better get into tuning as well. see the stickies in this board.

Too much air?????? The engine will only take in as much air as it wants/can. By putting the open element on you are allowing the engine to take in as much air as it wants. The stock air snorkel is very restrictive and will keep the engine from being happy, especially if you start modifying the car. Put that thing back on there, you want performance right?! Exhaust just doesn't mean a catback, it means headers and high flow cats.
headers, high flow cat, open element will do wonders for the car, start there, once you finish those, ask more questions.

Plus you already have an HEI distributor, unless yours is bad no need to change it. Just do a full tune up. Don't waste money on parts you don't need.

You'll need a professional shop to put the gears in for you, about 200-300 in labor, 200 for gears, 50-100 for a rebuild kit/fluid, 100-500 for a posi unit, definitely not cheap.

Sounds like you are new to the whole thirdgen/car modding scene, been there. Everything you need to know is on these boards, just do some searches. I learned everything about cars on this forum and have since changed headers, intake manifolds, rocker arms, transmissions, full tune ups, etc. Good luck!

yea im new obv. iv been reading on here for hours each night. my friend put the distrubuter on his car he said he prob got bout 10 horses out of it...i also got a difrent kind ov air filter its a part from spectra its more of a funnel with a cone air filter at the end

The distributor will not give you any horsepower unless you stock one is not performing well. You friend probably thinks he got 10 horsepower but I highly doubt it unless he dynoed it before and after, and if he just "thinks" it added 10hp, how does he know what 10hp feels like, always be skeptical. The first thing you need to remember is don't believe everyones horsepower numbers. You will see some people say. "I added a open element 10 hp, headers 20hp, catback exhaust 15hp, distributor 10hp, now I have 55hp over stock" but in reality, if you dynoed it you might pick up 15-25hp. Just get your car in tune...change spark plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor, ignition coil, change the coolant, power steering fluid, fuel filter, air filter, change the oil, oil filter, differential fluid, PCV valve, remove and clean the TBI/injectors, do the ultimate TBI mods, add some seafoam/injector cleaner to a full tank, change the transmission filter if you have an auto, clean the car, engine, and interior thoroughly. After you do that you are ready for performance modification. It will be nice to start modifying a clean, well maintained car and you will become much more familiar with it by just doing the things I described above. Definitely start with headers and an open element or whatever air induction setup you like, those should definitely be the first mods since you have a catback already, not question about it. Once you have a year or two into the car then you can think about doing heads and a cam, etc. Those require a crap load of work and not just with installing the parts but with the computer/EPROM programming that is involved.
Thirdgens are definitely a great learners car and especially with a TBI, very easy to understand and very easy to work on. I have since upgrade to a 2002 Z28 but took all knowledge that I gained from my 90 RS and applied it to my current car.
