305 tbi build up
So, i have a 305 tbi that smokes like a bitch. sat for a few years and now i have it. well im wanting to have the engine rebuilt. but instead of stock parts being put back on im planning on putting performance parts. now dont post anything in here if your one of those damn people who say just build a 350 and drop it in. i have a RS! and want to keep it with the 305. if i wanted the 350 i wuld have bought a Z28...
heads: world product s/r torquer heads
cam: need info on a good mild cam, nothing to much.
Shrt headers.
off road x-pipe
a TRUE(!!) dual exaust
TBI: needs info on a bigger tbi, cant seem to find one
3" open elemnt air filter set up
a custom chip to tie it all together
SS camaro style hood to draw in air or a 2 in crawl industion
any input would be awesome. but no swap to 350... i swear it gets so old so fast. thanks

Re: 305 tbi build up
The sad part is spending money on the parts you mentioned will be a huge waste of time unless you plan on turbosharging it! In that respect you would really need to convert to TPI or some sort to make it really work.
383 is a great platform.....for the same money

1. I would probably go with 175 TFS
2. LT4 cam or compcam 8-500-8
3. DynoDon headers with, 3"cat, and 3" catback
4. 46mm or 50mm TB with bored and slight ported 3704 or performer rpm
5. standard LO5 truck tbi air filter size is plenty, + cold air intake for the summer
6. EBL flash. A coustom chip will cost the same but make less power.
7. 3.23 gears if automatic +recalibrate the governor.

I wouldn't bother with a 3704 though, the flow is less than impressive, go straight to a performer EPS or RPM. I'd lean to the EPS as it's a 305. Make sure it's a non-airgap model.
What I don't get is that all the stuff you've listed is stuff you could just bolt onto your existing shortblock.
Question about the LO5 air filter? Is it a dual snorkel type? Cause the problem with the standard air cleaner is not the filter size, but the snorkel opening being too small.

Re: 305 tbi build up
what dont you get? i didnt really understand.
and thanks for the info except for the first 2. i want to stick with the 305. dog me all you want, idc. and hell, i dont have to go to tpi for a supercharger.
i think the LO5 is a dual snorkel. but im still leaning more towards the open element set up and change the hood to the SS or a 4th gen T/A hood.

Re: 305 tbi build up
As I said, a "rebuild" usually involves going into the shortblock. The rotating assembly, everything below the cylinder heads. None of the parts you listed addressed that.
If I were rebuilding a performance 305, I'd be planning a few other things.
1) Good hypereutectic, flat top pistons setup for 6" rods.
2) 6" rods rated for at least 7000 rpms.
3) forged crank
4) Get the entire rotating assembly balanced.
5) Full roller rocker arms.
6) Comp high RPM roller lifters
7) Dump the TBI in favor of multiport (but not a TPI setup).
8) Maybe a slightly more aggressive cam.
The TFS 305 heads flow very well for there valve size and the smaller 3.766" bore, but the 305 is down on displacement so you need to take a page from the honda book and rev it more. Plan to rev to at least 6500 rpms.
Mind you, such a setup is pricey. And similar mods to a 350 or 383 would make even more power.

i know that a 350 or 383 would make more power. hell, if i had an extra camaro i would toss a 454 in it. but i want to stick to the 305.
when i said rebuild, i was meaning when i do a engine rubilt thes are parts i would like to replace instead of the stock parts. i know i will prob need to replace crank, so ill go forged. can anyone tell me about these heads yall are telling me about? im still more pulling towads the world products torquer heads.

Re: 305 tbi build up
I did not assume he whants to built a high revving race engine, I was assuming standard rebuild with maybe hypereutetic pistons. I immagined a nice street friendly 280-300rwhp 305 TBI.
I did not mention the air cleaner, just the filter size. Fabbing a box around the 3x14" open element is not easy. The LO5 truck filter is same D like the LO3 one just taller. Filtering surface is same if not biggher then the 3x14", with the advantage of being available for little $.

Re: 305 tbi build up
thanks for the input. but i realize i cant use the trick flow. they wont fit. they fit on 305 up to 1986. i have a 1990. so back to the WP.
thomas you assumed right, im just wantin a nice little 275+ hp car. nothing to blow everyone out of the water, but to have more power than i do now.

Re: 305 tbi build up
from my experience with the 4th gen rear its just a direct bolt in. it will just be a hair wider.

where do you get off call me a *****? i thanked you for what help you gave me, but i dont like the fact you belittled my intelligence. ya, i might not know every thing about the 305. and because of it you belittle what i do know by being a smarta** and saying that. i KNOW what a rear axel does. hell, i even know what goes in to turn the dang thing... its called a drive shaft. was i right? and that bolts to a tranny. was i right again? im not fing stupid, dont belittle people.
