I have a 89 Camaro RS with the 305 TBI in it. It will Crank and Crank but will not start. Got it to start once with starting fluid but cant get it started again. When it fired it would just die. Seems like im not getting any fuel threw the injectors. I can't seem to hear the fuel pump running. It was running a few days ago when i moved it out of my garage. I was wondering if there was a fuel cut off switch for these or any easier test other then dropping the fuel tank? I changed the fuel pump relay so far. Thanks for any advice in advance!

 

ok well first thing you want to check is fuel pressure. if no pressure than you have a fuel pump problem. if you have fuel pressure, you want to check the injectors to see if they are getting signal. a very common problem for our cars is the ignition control module to go out. which sometimes can cut out the injectors and not the spark, or vice versa. or both.

 

Okay thanks alot. One question how would i be able to test the fuel pressure on the Camaro?

 

a local auto parts store can sell you one. on TBI's, they have you cut your fuel line and T into it so you can have the schrader valve to hook the gauge up to.

nope...check those things and see what you come up with.

 

My vote is for the fuel pump. Unscrew the feed line and put it in something that can hold gas, and have someone turn the key on, and see if gas comes out. If no gas comes out, your pump is probably fried.

 

dont let obvious things such as an empty gas tank mess this all up either

 

so i took the feed line off and turned the key.. i got nothing... so i lift up the carpet in the rear and its all nicely cut out and sealed. so i unscrewed the screws to look and see if the previous owner cut the tank. the tank has no scratches on it so this week im gonna replace the fuel pump.

Before u buy a fuel pump check the relay you never know I always check cheaper parts too.

 

my first thought was the relay so i bought a new one and still nothing.. yeah its nicely cut open i will post some pics.

 

well since about an hour ago i took the old pump out and replaced it now im getting fuel out of the feed line but nothing is coming out of the injectors. the battery seems to be dead tried to jump start it and got nothing so now its in the garage sitting on a battery charger on 2amps till the morning when i go out to try it again.

 

ok we tried a new battery and used an injector noid and it seems there is no power going to the injectors any ideas on a reason for that?

 

Could be a number of things you ECM will control power to the injectors and I know things like now oil pressure will cut off fuel as well are you getting any check engine light or at least see if you have a code even if your light is nOt on dues to maybe burnt out.

 

after more research we found that the PO had put in a VATS bypass and it looks pretty getto. tomorow im going to properly solder in the resistor and try it again.*keeps fingers crossed*

 

Good luck on finding the problem, seems like you needed a new pump, anyway so now you don't have to worry about it going out for a while. I hate VATS, its just one more reason I love the early third gens.

 

well the VATS has the resistor so that doesnt seem to be the problem. so far we have replaced: fuel pump, pump relay, and ICM. the is power going to the injectors but still no puls its there any other problems that could be stopping the injectors from firing?

 

I'm getting a similar problem on my wife's 88' v6 Camaro. Was running fine, started stuttering mildly whenever at a stoplight approximately 2 weeks ago, then yesterday started her up and drove for 12 seconds and the car cut off. Tried to restart and it would stay on with 1/2 open throttle in Park but would die if put in gear. Now I can hear the engine cranking and what appears to be spark however it doesn't seem to want to kick over and start as if it's not getting any/enough fuel. Probably gonna move down the line (pump relay, pump, kill the wife, cash insurance for new car, etc.)

 

ok im having a similar prob at first i lost all oil pressure and the car shut off i replaced the oil pressure switch it cranked up with normal oil pressure for about 30 min the ni cut car off changed oil and oil filter now it will turn over but wont crank at a lose as to what to do

 

I have this exact same problem i changed my injectors a month ago and was on my way to get tires put on and i just started coasting. So i have changed the filter and the fuel pump and strainer the batery was dead so i boosted it. And had the fuel line dissconected to see if the fuel came out it took awhile but it was not coming out of the two injectors and it was befor.

 

idk if its a help for you but the problem with my car turned out to be a bad wiring harnes and bad grounds in a few spots.

 

I have been checking the wiring the injectors work now but as of now i have no spark i changed the ignition coil and to night when i get out of work im going to get a new distributer.i have been looing for where all the grounds might ne but tjere is a lot of stuff on this board to sift throu.
