Maximizing power with an open element air cleaner

Hey everyone, I'm new to this site and kind of new to camaros too, about 3 mouths ago I bought my first car (I'm 16) and out of the 6 cars I looked at 5 of them were third gen camaros, they are by far my favorite car and I ended up buying a 91 rs, but anyways, last weekend I put a 14x3 edelbrock open element air cleaner on my car, i haven't gotten to drive with it on yet (my radiator cracked) but I need some ideas for basically getting cooler air too it, instead of the hot engine air. I have two ideas.

First, just leaving the stock tbi air box attached with the hose directed towards my new air cleaner, which would hopefully give it some cooler air.

Second, I have a tpi air box that came with the car (idk why) but I would put that on and run a hose fromand direct it towards my new air cleaner, I would probably put filters in the air box too

I guess my question then would be, which one has better air flow? They both seem extremely restrictive. And help or ideas would be great, thanks.

the TPI one plus a Bonnet from a FWD cady will make a good one, needs some cutting and JB welding but pretty straight foreward

Re: Maximizing power with an open element air cleaner

I'm looking for something simple, I'm only 16 and just had to purchase a new radiator, so my budget is low, I'm looking for something I can make with all the stock parts from a tbi air intake, and a tpi air box

I'm really looking so much for a cold air kit, just a way to direct cooler air to the open element cleaner

Re: Maximizing power with an open element air cleaner

im 18. i made it for about 13 bucks, 6.50 for the TPI air cleaner and 6.50 for the cady bonnet. jb weld is like 3 bucks for two tubes. reused the air temp sensor. used a push in style breather you have to do some modifying to make it work(the cady part), someone has a good write up on here i just cant find it atm

Re: Maximizing power with an open element air cleaner

just stick both the TPI and TBI directors on there then... but the difference will be basically un noticible FWIW heres the write up i was talking about https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/tbi/...ir-intake.html

Re: Maximizing power with an open element air cleaner

How about a make-shift heat shield over the exhaust manifolds. A piece of sheet metal and some snips, a drill to make some holes in it. Simple but effective.

Re: Maximizing power with an open element air cleaner

That sounds like a great idea, and something I can do. I'm hopefully buying a z28 vacuum controlled ram air hood soon, so that will take care of the hot air problems, I just thought maybe directing some cool air with the stock intake boxes might help a little bit, I know there would be a very small gain, if any, so it's not a big deal

Re: Maximizing power with an open element air cleaner

you can modify the 305 air cleaner assembly, get some ducting and direct to the middle of the engine bay where you can have the the tpi box installed, bottom cut out. either install a larger truck filter in the tbi air assembly, or discard the small filter there and install 2 filters in the air box. pretty simple. someone did this before may be the link posted above.
