305 TBI fan switch questions

I discovered the other day that my fan switch was not working. I didnt think much of it, just switched my ac on and continued with my day. I had then stopped by my local auto parts store and asked for a fan switch so I could replace it when I had the chance. As usual, the dumb dumbs had no idea what I was talking about. Seems like even with simple stuff, they are clueless. I left and planned to just remove the switch when I had the chance and take it to them so they had a visual aid. Anyway, I just got around to it and realized that the connector just came loose, stuck it back in and fans came on as normal. But the connector is broken and will not stay plugged in. I believe there is also supposed to be some kind of stem inside the switch that is plugged into the head that the connecter goes into? If so, mine broke off. So far that I can tell, I not only need to replace the switch but the connector on the wire as well. Here are a few problems I have with that: I do not have a socket big enough to fit on the switch, and I do not know where to get the connector to splice onto the wire (or fit over the plug that is already there, idk I have not seen the plastic pieces not melted). SO, I was thinking about wiring a toggle switch to ground out the relay manually to turn the fans on (AC blows hot air, not cold so having it on all the time sucks). Thanks to my research, I know how to wire the toggle switch but I do not know if there are any disadvantages to that. I have been reading that these engines have to be hot to burn fuel properly. Are there really disadvantages to having the fans run all the time? Seems like it would be better for the engine, but not better for gas mileage. Also, can anybody tell me what size socket I need to take the fan switch out of the engine block? Any information will be greatly appreciated.

Re: 305 TBI fan switch questions

you can get the switch and plug together from hypertech, they make switches that kick your fan on earlier and require a 180* stat for optimal cooling. I will find a link for you. what year and model is your car...engine? A/C delco makes a plug wire for it also but it is a piece of JUNK In my experience.

NAPA still sells the connectors. There are many options for switches.

Thats where I got my connector from, it was a AC Delco connector that fit very loose on the fan switch. Maybe it was just my bad luck.

a 180* Stat is to be used with it. (if you choose this fan switch over a stock)

Re: 305 TBI fan switch questions

O BTW, I believe the socket was either a 7/8 deep or a 13/16 deep.

Re: 305 TBI fan switch questions

That is exactly what I am looking for! Thank you! Just out of curiosity, why do all of the switches look round and the connectors oval?

Re: 305 TBI fan switch questions

its a squeeze connector, you squeeze it in half to slip it over the round switch end for a snug fit.

Re: 305 TBI fan switch questions

Gotcha. I have been trying to find out if there would be any measurable differences with running colder. Some stuff I read said you would get worse gas mileage, but a little better power, other things i've read said it would improve both. I have even read that it would make no difference either way but would cause less wear on the car. Dont suppose you would be able to clear that up as well?

Re: 305 TBI fan switch questions

From my research I found that the stock 235 or whatever the temp is was for smog purposes.. higher temp burns off more emmissions... with that setup I sent you my car stays around 185-200 and I love it. If you every really have a overheat issue it gives you sometime to notice before its too late and I just feel more comfortable with a cooler engine.
