305 TBI timing
Hello everyone,
This is my very first post so bear with me lol....
I have a 92 camaro everything on this car still has the GM stamp even down to the pcv hose but anyways... i been reading different posts about the timing on these 305 tbi and i wanted to know if my 92 timing correct ( the story goes I was driving it home one hot day and it started runing ruff then when i hit the corner of my street it completly died i had to mess with the timing to get it started again got it home and took out the DISTrUBITOR set the timing best i could and it cranked right up) it now reads 0 degrees (right between the big V) with the wire unpluged and 12 degrees with the wire plugged in and at idle (ignition timing??? ) runs the best i advanced it to the next peak (4 degrees??) (with the wire unpluged) the idle hangs high and it slowly comes back down and if its retared then its all sound no power and today i went back and forth down the road and right where it is now its the best but the idle sits at 1100 1200 and it moves/ revs up and down very very little though ( but that might because of the worn out clutch, it sounds like grass hopers/cricket noise also intill you put a little pressure on the clutch)
if you have any ideas or anything that could help would be great or ease my mind lol o yea im not sure but i see a lot of oil residue near the distubitor ....do they suppost to have like a gasket between were it sits on the intake manifold i dont think i saw one (or it could have been so decaded it fell apart idk)
i was thinking maf sensor ....i changed out the iak valve ,plugs, wires, cap and rotor, fuel fiter, fuel pump and other things like motor mounts tranny mount battery lol Idk im lost it could be just me worrying to much idk lol

Re: 305 TBI timing
When you set the timing with the esc wire unplugged you are setting the base timing. The rest is controlled by the chip in the ECM. My car likes a little it advanced but I forget how much. I think like 6 degrees? My RPM gauge shows about double what it actually is so I wouldn't trust that. The slight rpm surge I've seen but not sure what it was.

Re: 305 TBI timing
I used to run at 4* advanced base but since have gone back to 0* because of smog and really can't tell much of a difference. I think all in all the car is happier at 0* so that's where I'm keeping it.
Yes there is a distributor mounting gasket. And for a few dollars you should change out the EGR valve - Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve. I found mine to be a vacuum leak.

would it produce a lot of oil residue on the intake because i have no mounting gasket???
I changed out the egr valve like a yr ago and i "tested" pushing it up and and engine died down a little
I checked the timing again it is right between the big V (example \'/)
I took it to the highway floored it
1 to 2 good 3 to 4 it seam it was all bark no bite and it back fired a little (i dont have over the axle pipe nor muffler it fell off and have not got the money to replace it yet) 4th gear seam better the 3rd (3rd feels like it didnt want to move) i been givin and taking on the timing but when 3 gear feels like it should it has no get up in the 1 and 2
sorry for going on and on but i am stumped i though vacume leak ...that seams fine other then after it warms up it idles at 1100-1200
could it be map i have not change that out yet lol but thanks guys for all your help in this it is really nice to talk to someone other then my self ...and banging my head agaist the wall

Re: 305 TBI timing
Zenish, hello do you know where i can find a video or some kind of diagram for replacing the gasket on the tbi? I also bought the egr solenoid and im going to replace that. My car has a high idle. I already replaced some of the vacuum hoses, but there is a leak somewhere still. I hope you can help.
Thank you

Re: 305 TBI timing
These cars have no port to measure fuel pressure, you would need to find someone that has the adapter or buy one.
Here are a couple treads covering the procedure
https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/tbi/...-pressure.html
https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/tbi/...sure-test.html
Defect water temperature sensor, defect spark plug cable, anything ignition related, … there are many parts that could cause similar symptoms if not working correctly.

Re: 305 TBI timing
three bolts hold down the tbi.first try tightening the bolts to make sure its tight.mine got loose once.i suspect that you could change the gasket by just removing the bolts without unhooking much.just lift it far enough to change the gasket.btw all the things hooked to the tbi won't interchange meaning that you can't hook it up wrong.you may need to readjust the cable to the transmission afterwards if yours is an automatic.
Thanks for the help guys ...you been helping me out so i don't put my hair out lol....ithe problem was the gasket for the tbi (base gasket)...
But now my timing reads 3 ATDC (with the plug unpluged)and 12 BTDC (with it pluged in ) and the car has lot of power (***** )
when i put the base timing at 0 (with the plug unpluged) and its 13, 14 BTDC( with the plug pluged in)( it passed the timing tab) and it doesnt have that much power
i been looking over the web to see if anyone been threw this and nothing along my line or is it something i am or aint doing
thanks again
o yea the rpms sit at 700 800 (under 1000 rmp)since the gasket replacement ....sorry for all this info i want to make sure you guys have all the info on whats going on because this timing thing is kicking my *** im siting there itching my head lol
