Oil Pressure Problems

Hey, My car (Camaro RS 1992 305 TBI with 44K MILES) shows Low Oil Pressure when ever the temperature is about 200+ .. The meter is almost at 0 so I checked the oil level and it is just fine, can anyone tell me why this might be happening? The pressure is just fine when ever the car is started in themorning or when ever the engine is cold!! It is running on Mobil 1 {5w 30}.. and I change the oil and filter every 3000 miles.. Any ideas about the Problem??

My car has a Open element and Flowmaster 80 series catback and also "ultimate TBI mods" so Do you guys think it has atleast 15 to 20 more Hp than stock and what would the torque be?

Sounds like the oil is thinning out too much, but no one else seems to have any problems. Is the engine stock? Maybe try 10w30.

I'd say you'd be lucky if you got that much out of those mods. A good set of heads makes about 40-50 hp, so 15-20 hp just from TBI mods and exhaust seems like a stretch.

Thanks Man, I was just wondering about the Hp... I thought shaving the ridges on the TBI also the the throttle plates and installing a open element and a cat back would help about 15 hp!! I live in KY and the temp here goes to about 30-50 so do you think its better that I should get 10-30 instead of 5-30 which im currently using?

except for the above mentioned things everything else is stock! so if the oil is thinning, doe sit result in serious engine damage???

Is this reading on the stock guage? I don't trust those and have installed Autometers particulary for oil psi and temp. You might hook a direct mechanical oil pressure guage up even a cheap one just temp to check it for peace of mind before you go changing anything else.

All the gauges are stock and I i even checked the oil level about an hour ago and it was just fine and the pressure was also fine as the eingine was cold!!! the problem exists only when the temp gauge is on or above 200

Mine idles at 25 to 35 when hot. I'd think near zero would be a problem since you only have 44K. Mine is at 150K right now

You might try installing a 180 t-stat to keep the eng running cooler overall. Just make sure that the fan will come on when needed to support that temp.

Good luck!!

Stick to the Mobil 1 5W-30. It will provide all the protection you need and the thinner viscousity will help the engine turn easier. When you check the factory gauge be sure to check the sending unit. If you had a few bucks, I would replace the sending unit right off and see how the gauge reacted. In my experience, the sending units are more often the problem rather than the gauge itself. If you replace the sending unit and gauge and still have almost zero when hot, then you're going to have to disassemble and check your oil pump.

The sending unit is usually above your oil filter adapter. I have a Caprice but F-body should be the same. It will be screwed into the block with a wire coming from it. BUT BE CAREFUL, YOUR KNOCK SENSOR ALSO SCREWS INTO THE BLOCK. Knock sensor is not near oil filter though.
I cant tell you how to test it electrically. Mechanically, you'd have to set up a pressurised system. I,d just replace it.

For what its worth, the suggested oil for these engines is 10w30.

These oil pressure sending units are flaky. I'm about a mood swing away from replacing mine due to abnormal readings and a suspected oil leak.

I don't know much about oil viscosity, but unless someone else can make a better case I'd change the oil first, change the sending unit second.

Just my .02
