Hi all just got a 89 RS. I am looking for info to swap this into my 85 2.8 auto firebird. The wiring harness was removed and is lying to the side. Would I be better off to just pull the 305 and 5 speed and convert it to a carb? Or try and wire it back as a TBI car. The firebird is a mpfi car. Any T thoughts would be appreciated!

 

"I" would be more likely to fix up the '89 than to use it as a donor for an older V-6 car. How bad is the '89?

A converted V-6 car will have NO resale value. The only possible advantage will be that insurance might (MIGHT!) be less if the insurance company doesn't know about the V-8 swap.

 

89 took hit on passenger side lights, tire appears to be moved back small amount. That is why I wanted to fix the firebird, plus firebird has sentimental value.

 

I don't think you will see much of a benefit swapping in that 305. It's still under 200hp and will be lots of work. The 5 speed will make it fun, but it isn't known to be very strong. If you do it though I would keep it TBI. Swap over the harness and ECM from the 89.

 

Put all the 305 tbi stuff into the v6 car. The 305 tbi will be much more fun than the old 2.8 if its running right. Ive owned both.

 

I'm thinking of getting 305/5 speed running then save up for 383 / t56 conversion.

 

Sure....there is nothing wrong with modding the 305 as long as its something you can swap to the 350 or 383 down the road.

 

The 305 will be much better and will sound great. Later down the road go for a 350. But upgrading to ANY V8 will be very satisfying I can assure you!
