This is the Throttle body on my car, 17088028, which is correct for '88. I also have another throttle body, 17089062, which is correct for '89-'90, removed from a car in a junk yard early 2000s. Both have the horizontal connector version of the TPS.
The ACDelco 213-905, which is indicated as the replacement for my '88, has a vertical connector, according to the product picture. Many of the other generic replacements are vertical as well, but some are horizontal. I'm being told that vertical is correct but I'm skeptical that it will fit under the air cleaner. So, what is correct?
You need to get the same style connector (horizontal) cause the arm also will be in the opposite direction. I had the same problem. I found one on ebay that matched what I had.
I haven't, yet. Thanks. Any idea if new ACDelco is available? Digging through eBay, I found NOS GM 17111725 and 17111787. No idea if either is correct. The apparent difference is that one is adjustable and the other is not.

This one should work if installed with the connector facing down. There appears to be a bunch of room for the connector. Adjustable isn't required on the 3rd gen TBI units as the ECM auto-zero's it. But being adjustable won't hurt anything, just get it in the 0.4V to 0.7V range.
I don't think there is a whole lot of room for the vertical one. The connector also does not seem like it would reach without putting strain on the wires, if it reached at all.
Very well may be. I did some checking on RockAuto concerning the two TPS units. As you mentioned the unit with the horizontal connector is correct for the '88 - '90 TB (note that many TBI trucks use this same one). While the unit with the vertical connector appears to be for the '85 - '89 TPI.
As @mecham84 posted, the Standard TH39 is what RockAuto lists for the '88 - '90 TBI.
