TBI Setup

Hey guys new to the board here, I own a 1992 Camaro RS 305 TBI with a 5-Speed Manual, Im considering modding this engine instead of doing a engine swap and keeping the 305 for a while. and I have a question on horsepower, right now my car is stock. The setup im probably going to go for is something like, Vortec heads, Intake Manifold (not sure if the edelbrock performer manifold will fit anyone know?), keeping the stock TB, and doing all the Ultimate TBI mods, 3.42 Gears, LT1 or a Aftermarket cam thats a little bigger than the LT1, Custom Burnt Chip, 350 Injectors (will this work?), All MSD ignition, 1 3/4 headers and a 3 inch system threw a high flow cat, and high flow muffler, with a cut out near the Y pipe. Do I have everything covered what else do u guys recomend.

Also if I went with this exact setup (Free TBI mods, Open air With K&N Filter, 350 Injectors, Edelbrock Performer Intake (if itll work if not then the vortec manifold ), Vortec Heads, LT1 Cam, 1 3/4 headers, 3 inch system with High flow cat and Muffler, MSD Ignition wires, coil, cap, etc., and 3.42 Gears) About How much HP and Ft Lb Torque would I be looking at? and about what ET in the 1/4 Mile? I might do a engine swap later but im looking to mod this 305 first and get all I can out of it, Thanks for readin sorry so long.

Well that sounds like a good plan but I'd make a few changes depending on when and if you ever go to anything more than 450hp and 350+ cubes.
Get the vortec heads milled and machined for the larger lift before you install them! Go with either the Lt1 or Lt4 cam, anything more and the small bore of the 305 starts to make it's street manners finiky. Yes the edelbrock performer will fit but it needs to be the one made for vortec heads (special bolt pattern). The stock TB is probably fine and the 350 injectors will be plenty as long as you stay with your plan of something around the Lt4 specs and definatly a custom eprom (crank the fuel pressure up before you take it to get a custom eprom).
The gears sound perfect for a street car, I'd go with 3.73's since you've got a 5 speed but that's just my preference. Don't forget about the $99 SLP take-off torsen unit, if you don't get that and keep the open diff we'll ban you from the site . The MSD ignition isn't needed! I wouldn't do that unless you've actually got the extra cash burning a hole in your pocket (I don't and I'm plenty fast). Understand that the stock ignition system is VERY good and has it's advantages over the MSD ignition. If you must, start out with just a higher voltage coil and regap the plugs to .045"
The headers are too big for a 305. You don't need anything more than 1 5/8 unless you're running some large cubes (350+ and 450+hp). It wouldn't hurt but it's a little on the large side for a 305. I wouldn't bother with the cut out and if I did I wouldn't put it next to the y-pipe, I'd put it back near the rear.
Do a search for hp and torque, there was just a recent post about this and from what I've seen you can expect a VERY fun car. Definatly in the 13's.
Sheesh, and I thought I was just going to take a break from my calc homework, HA, back to study .

The Fuel Pressure Mod

Thanks for the Reply, dont let me fool u into making myself look like I know alot haha, once u get into the measurements and numbers of everything, I get lost. Im still New on cars and Ive just picked up that those mods were good to do by reading around some but anyway now to make myself sound dumb im sure,

Ok when u do the free TBI mods and u do the adjustable Fuel Pressure mod, and I did the mods I talked about above, U say to crank the fuel pressure up before I went to go get my Eprom burnt, well when u do this mod how do u know how much to up or lower your fuel pressure, do u have to hook your car to a laptop/desktop or do u basically just guesstimate?

and I know im gonna get it for this :ducks and hides: . whats a torsen unit do? and whats the open Diff? Still in the learning process about cars, so forgive me if I sound dumb . Thanks again for the help

Bump up the fuel pressure if you are using the 305 injectors and stock ECM. This is a rough way to offset the now lean fuel/air mixture going into the 350. You may not have to do this if you put 350 injectors but you will DEFINITELY not reach full potential without doing prom work.

You can check for the best fuel pressure by checking your o2 sensor readings via computer or a "field expedient" method listed in the tech articles on this site.

Custom eproms cost a few hundred bucks, but again there is a good article and quite a few experts on this subject who could help get you started making your own chips.

A differential is what transfers power from the axle to each rear wheel. An open differential basically provides very little resistance to the difference between the power applied to each wheel. In other words, power will be transferred to the wheel that spins the easiest. Thus you will get what is commonly referred as "peg leg" or one wheel spins when you step on the gas.

A better type of differential or POSI diff is specially designed to keep power applied to BOTH wheels, which means better traction.

A Torsen diff is just a type of POSI, the only difference is whats inside.

Mike, one thing that will help you with knowing where you are with the fuel pressure is to put a fuel pressure gauge in the high pressure side of your fuel line. This will let you know how much of a difference you made in your adjustment and help aid in tuning your setup.

Yet Another Question

Yet Another Question

Ok I went and Downloaded this WinALDL or whatever it is for tuning your car and they show how to make a little wire that plugs into a serial port. ok a couple questions on this, Is this program good or does anyone else have some better suggestions? Can this program be used to customize my own PROMs? and how hard is that little wire to make? Im not going to be getting into the customizing PROMs thing yet (No Need im still all stock ) I was just going to use it to monitor things, and go ahead and see how it works since I might get into the customizing PROMs (Assuming this is how and hte program u use to do it)

Thanks again guys

If you price similar diagnostic equipement at a parts store its about $150 so its a great deal.
