I am getting a chip from someone got some q's
I am getting a chip from someone for 50 bucks. It's an off the shelf chip and it was in a 305 tbi bird. My car is a 305 tbi camaro. the guy I am buying it from is very reputable around here so I am not worried about anything other than one thing. If I decide that I don't want the chip anymore and I put my stock chip back in, will the car behave completely normal again. Basically I am asking if the process is reversible. Also, any tips for storing the stock chip some where? should I keep it well protected, etc.

Yeah, if you put the stock chip in it's exactly the same as it was. The computer only reads tables and values off the chip so it knows how to meter fuel, control spark advance, torque convertor lock-up, etc. It doesn't permenately retain anything that it reads off the chip.

hmm...an off the shelf chip and you're asking if the car will performe any different when swapping between them...no. The general rule is off the shelf = no difference to begin with so no, no difference in performance or cars operation.
It's a waste of money. I'd rather run a stock GM eprom than run something made by some company that has even LESS of a clue what my car needs or doesn't need. That's like taking your holley carb to edelbrock and asking them for the correct jets and adjustments for your engine.
You disapoint me. I wouldn't pay more than $10 for an off the shelf eprom. Only reason I'd pay $10 is to read it, look at what they changed and get a good laugh out of it. It takes a while just to find a difference between the stock and off the shelf brands. Usually it's nothing except a little bit of timing here or there and nothing else. I've noticed some change the tcc settings but I must say I think it's because they just want you to "feel" a difference and that's the biggest yet sudle difference I can think of.
Have fun but $50 and I would have an Lt1 cam over an eprom anyday.

Hey Jon,
I'll send you the Hypertech chip outta my 92 RS so that you can read it if you like. I think it would be interesting to see what exactly they do. I've read that they also change the fuel map at full throttle. But so does the stock chip, right?
I've read in GMHTP quite a few times about guys taking the aftermarket chip out, advancing the base timing a few notches, and picking up .2-.4 sec. And they did this after a head/cam/exhaust/fuel intake change. I don't doubt that at all.
AJ
BTW, I'm serious about mailing it to you, FOC. It seems that you're the one that knows enough about it to find out. Email me and let me know where to send it, OK?

you should store the chip in a electrically disipitive bag. these or the silvery looking bag that mother boards and such come in. It will protect it from electro static discharge. Also try to keep it dry, and protect it from impacts!

The reason why adjusting base timing is more important is because whatever that number is is added to ALL the other timing changes in the eprom across the board. You set your base from 0 to 8 degrees and lets say you had max timing at 32, now it'll be 40 after you advance the base timing. BIG differences with only a degree or two change in the base! The eproms don't do anything unless 100kpa and a bunch of other stupid things and even then that stuff could have been fixed by just changing the fuel pressure and base timing.

My car stayed the same, tried it with stock chip and then with Hypertech chip. Ran both with 4* advanced timing. Made no other changes to the car between chips. My car was a five speed also, the autos that I had seen only a .012 difference witha better chip.
