Timing Help
Well, I just set my timing to 4* BTDC. Anyways - it kinda sounds like its knocking at around 1500 rpms. And it idles a little worse. so, i check timing (w/o ESC plugged in) - its still 4* - shut down car, plug ESC back in, check timing - off the timing mark - its like 12* or so!! Is this normal????? All of these reading were at idle, in neutral. Please help as I am so confused!!

Timing
Look on the inside of your hood for a sticker that has the degree settings. It should tell you you need to have it in drive to check it , so you will need a friend or a good e-brake.
Hope this helps

Wow. It says to set ebrake and block drive wheels, but it dont say to put it in gear!!
Either that - or I am blind (I just ran out to check!)...Weird - Well, I guess I'll have to set it once again - I hope your right, it could save me a lot of trouble! Thanks!

well, tried it the 'right way' in drive and all - i dont get it - it seems like i am doin everything right - but when I cplug ESC back in, timing jumps to 12*, and it'll ping at about 1250-1500 rpms... base setting w/ esc disconnected is 4*..i dont get it - maybe I am dumb??!!!??

ESC
Not sure about the ESC but I wouls set it with everything plugged in, that may be the problem. Are you taking off your air cleaner to get to the dist.? If so make sure you plug the vaccum line for the thermac up. it will effect idle.
yes, I have the vacuum line all sealed up - in dash tach reads 500. chiltons, and the underhood sticker says to disconnect elecronic spark control (tan wire, black stipe, single wire connector), so I do...everything works all good and fine - then i plug esc back in, turn car abck on, and boom, it sets itself to 12*... anyone have thi problem? it CANT be normal...maybe ESC is going????

isnt that normal????? i know you set your base timing to 4 but that dont mean it will stay at 4 even when your idle. your computer will advance your timing and it will have overall timing and will not run off just base timing.
firbird, ok, thats what I was asking..it just seems like if ya set base timing to X degrees (at idle...), it should stay that way till it needs to be advanced...but I could be wrong...all I know is my L03 runs, while not bad, not as nice as I would like... I suspect I have a spark plug with a bad gap (long story...sorta...), and I knwo my EGR isnt working right (it sticks closed, but I just made it stick open earlier today!).... uhg... wish I could buy a nice, new, 350!!
EDIT : yeah, I can be a moron...in case someone is wondering... :lala:

Make sure that when you retighten down the distributor that you don't turn it. I did that a few times and when i rechecked the timing i figured that I was rotating the distributo when I tightened it down. Maybe keep one hand on it and the other hand to tighten it. Also when you set the base timing, maybe have a buddy give her a little gas. You should get a more acurate reading that way.
