All I would have to say is make sure all sensors are working properly, and do a tuneup on the engine. New Plugs/Wires/Cap/Rotor etc..

My setup from the signature with a non LU converter I get around 17-18mpg around town.
TPIs get a lot better, there's one person on these boards, I forget his name gets 30mpg.
It's all in how well tuned and efficient your motor can be.

Ok, just checking. I can't remember exactly what my gas mileage works out to be, but know that I get 250+ miles from a tank on everyday driving. All hwy gets about 320 miles. Of course, neither one uses the whole volume of the tank. This is usually on about 13 gallons.
Ok, I got a calculator...
approx 20mpg city
approx 25mpg hwy
This is an 87 TPI 305 w/5 speed

I really should check. I'm kinda stuck at school right now though so I'll have to get back to it.
It does seem to do a lot better once you drive it in overdrive more often and don't gun it constantly, lol
I am in the process of replacing my fuel filter though so I'm hoping that will help. It's being a pain though, couldn't get the #$%@! thing off last night, and I don't wanna break my fuel lines...

Speedfreaker,
You might run a search to see what some of the carb guys are getting for mpg. I know on my 84 (non computer carb'd 350 w/5 speed) I used all kinds of gas. 12 mpg if I remember right.
FyreLance,
Yeah, taking it easy makes a huge difference. Hope the fuel filter replacement goes ok. I don't really have much that'll help you with it. Are the fittings corroded or just tight? Other than that, new plugs, wires, cap/rotor and things will help you too. Oh yeah, I got a big improvement by resetting my timing to spec and fixing a high idle condition that I had.

To adjust the timing, you'll need a timing light and either a distributor wrench ($30 i think), a wrench bent at an angle, or a crow foot wrench set. I use the crow foot wrench on the end of a wobble extension on my ratchet. Figured I didn't have an extra wrench to bend to reach the hold down bolt so since I had to buy something I'd get a set of crows feet (correct terminology?) for thirty something bucks.
