Breaking in engine
Breaking in engine
i have around 1500 mile on the new engine in my TA. i have been changing the oil every 500 miles on it, and was wondering when i can stop that. Changing the oil everyother week isnt that fun! the oil that comes out looks clean...so how long do i have to wait?

LOL, Mark has it right, the first oil change you do fairly soon to get any left over crap and lube out of the engine, after that you "get normal", but hey, you haven't hurt anything, so all's good.
so just go like this till about 3k? then normal 3k oil changes? i was also told not to use synthetics till i hit the 3k mark...when i get there,,,should i swap over? or keep the regular 10w-30 castrol GTX?
well...i know i might get shot for asking this cause its been debated alot...but what should i go with,,, and y do people say syntetics are better? i thought synthetics were jsut better for high mileage engines.

Availibility wise Mobil 1 will be the best. Though Amsoil is supposed to be better hardly anyone carries it.
Synthetic lubricates better, decreasing wear. I'm sure Vader or someone else can go more into depth.

Synthetics are better in the sense that they lubricate better. Some people don't like to use them in higher mileage engines though. They tend to start burning oil, or causing oil leaks. Also, I wouldn't use synthetic in a fresh motor. It is better for break-in purposes to just use regular oil for a few oil changes. How long, I've been told about 10k miles is enough, and that sounds ok to me. After break in, its a good idea to switch to synthetic.

I put Mobil 1 in after about 1k miles.
Synthetic won't create leaks, but it will have make the ones there more noticable.

You'll be fine to go synthetic now, I mean new Vettes come with Mobil 1 from the factory. Granted I'm sure the motors have been broken in some, but no where near 10k, you think??

ohhh shiiit...dude its way too late for me!! i read that wrong!!! i thoguht you said "about 1k miles TO go"....LOL my bad!!! well sweet!! i dont gotta do a oil change this weekend then!!
yeah, about 1500 miles is a fine break in. i'd break it in at about 500 miles, but thats just me.
an oil side note:
Most shops put 20w-50 non synthetic oil into rebuilt engines. newly machined engines are still kind of "rough" and have to a little wear to do, the heavy oil ensures that everything gets soaked in oil that clings on to make the wearing process easier.
As for synthetic....well for a f-body yeah i'd use it. But i'm not a real big fan of it. I definatly dont think it lubricates better than normal oil. But what it does do is it resists temperature extremes much better.
