How to get a 305 in the 14's
How to get a 305 in the 14's
I have a 1972 corvette with a 1987 305 engine (I bought the car that way). The 305 has a quadrajet GM aluminum intake mallory distributor and headers (brand unknown). The cars runs decent but is considerably slower than my Caddy STS (no track times on vette yet). How can I get this car to run high 14's all motor with stock heads and keeping the A/C power brakes etc. I assume the car has a rear gear ratio in the low 3's (3.08 etc). Thanks for your help
wow....thats a pretty heavy car for just a 305. i'd really consider getting a bigger engine: at least a 350, and if you're real serious a 427 or 454. I think you'd be alot happier if you just shelled out for the bigger engine than just messing around with the 305 all the time.

Agreed... Vette need Rat motor. A 305 is bordering on blasphemy.
Aside from that, I'm curious as to why you want to keep the stock heads- if you want it in the 14's n/a, heads are a good mod to make.

Well, you have to work on the torque end of things. Headers do major miracles for 305s. A decent cam, like a Crane PowerMax 266 or Comp XE 256, along with a port and polish job on your stock 305 heads ought to get you into the 14s, no problem.

My combo puts me in the 14's corrected to sea level (see sig).
It's the combo, really. Heads, cam, intake, exhaust all have to work together. In a Vette, you can use long-tube headers (which I assume you already have), which helps both torque and power. A higher stall converter is also needed to allow the engine to spin up into the powerband right off the line.
If you run the stock 305 heads, get a Standard Abrasives deluxe porting kit and do everything they say to do in the instructions (they even use a 305 head for their example). While you're at it, have the intake valves changed to 1.94". Won't be quite as good as the WP's when you're done, but close.
In a '72 Vette, I'd have to vote with the Rat crowd, though...

"Mongo say, 'Vette need 427 aluminum Rat. It original intent of car designers in '67. Mongo like less weight, more go-go. Mongo like to empty aluminum cans to make more Rat blocks. Mongo can't count past ten, so he need a car faster than that...."
If the '72 is in good condition, it might be worth recycling some old beer cans. I'd be tempted. There's nothing like 550 HP to break into the 10's.

My dad has had a 1972 vette with the origional standard 350 since the day it came off the showroom. Even with the 350ftlb of torque it has its still bad on the acceleration. Well it aint bad, it feels like its ripping the tarmac off the road, but the speedo dont move much.
I really really suggest dropping at least a 350 in to get it at least back to the origional cubes, unless it came with a 454 that is
(that would suck though, cause only about 3900 came with the big block beast, somewhat worth more $$$)
No point worrying about keeping it origional either since your allready missing the origional block. So hunt around for a little, maybe youll find a deal on a 350, or big block something.
If i was so lucky as to own one, id definately be reaching for the 454 as long as the car wasnt origional.
What color is the car?
