Did you take off the mechanical fuel pump?
All the lifters out?
Distributor out?
Okay, not trying to suggest anything about you, just covering the bases.

Did you reinstall the cam sprocket and try to turn it by hand? It should move easily after all of 5-7's suggestions. If it spins freely but won't slide out, you may have a bearing that is grooved by a burr on the cam, effectively locking it in place. If that's the case, you'll be looking at new cam bearings.

yes youll need to, the part of the cam where it sits on the bearing will be held up by the mechanical pump......

If the cam won't come out, try turning the crank a few degrees... rods can be within the "volume" occupied by the cam's bearing journals as it slides out.
