Did you take off the mechanical fuel pump?

All the lifters out?

Distributor out?

Okay, not trying to suggest anything about you, just covering the bases.

Did you reinstall the cam sprocket and try to turn it by hand? It should move easily after all of 5-7's suggestions. If it spins freely but won't slide out, you may have a bearing that is grooved by a burr on the cam, effectively locking it in place. If that's the case, you'll be looking at new cam bearings.

How the fork did they even get that installed? Are you certain the cam wasn't hitting the rear plug of the cam bore? Damn!

I believe that the installer of the cam tried to install the cam from the rear of the engine (IMPOSSIBLE TO DO). Since the cam wouldn't go, he got out the attitude adjuster and when to town.

Un-flippen'-believable!

If the cam won't come out, try turning the crank a few degrees... rods can be within the "volume" occupied by the cam's bearing journals as it slides out.

Yea, someone beat that with a hammer. The rear plug will just shine it up, it doesnt do damage like that.
