another very stupid question

had my car running for about 10 minutes a half hour ago.. a lifter (i think?) is making a noise so I want to throw in some crap thats supposed to help it stop that.. but I can't get the oil cap off.. its one of those rubber ones.. I had the hood open the past 30-min to an hour and it still doesn't give.. i've tugged and twisted and everything.. shaking the car and engine and all and it stays tight... is there some trick i'm missing.. I thought about getting some vice grips on there and really yanking at it.. but then if it tears out I don't know where to get a replacement... (oh and I mean that I WAITED 30-min to an hour to let it cool and then tried to take it off)

DON'T use Visegrips or anything like that . B/c if it breaks off like mine did before , it can fall down in your head or engine . It did not fall off in mine , but I got lucky ! That thing isn't always easy getting off man . Is your fingers slipping on it any ? If so put on a glove and give it a try , or put on two gloves and trying pulling it with both hands .........Your question is not a stupid question .

Try to get it to TURN only, instead of pulling. Once it is turning, it should be free enough to pull out.

Years of heat and mineral oil have probably made the rubber about as hard as a frozen puck.

I got it off.. it turned and turned.. but i quickly realized that wasn't doing anything.. then I tried to pull it out so hard my fingers hurt.. so finally I just tied a small piece of rope to it and leaned back.. and out it came...

If I'd have had all that trouble that you did that rope would have gone around my neck instead... I have very little patience....
