so i get my new steering box from the junk yard and.........

the guy dropped it in the sand. so the sand got into holes where the hose go i think. but then the guy took it and cleaned it really good so it looks ok. My question is should i try put something where the holes are that the fuild goes in, like to try and rinse it better to get the sand out if there is any? someone also told me to use brake cleaner. also the steering box has resistance when i try and turn it by hand,is that normal?

How did the guy clean it? I would double check it just because it would suck if you got it going and then discovered that it is jacked.

I wonder if the compressed air forced the sand even further into the holes. Could you just fill the box with p/s fluid, and dump the fluid out?

Reminds me of when I got some brand-new-looking rotors off a camaro with "blown motor" written on the windshield- I took off the rotor, saying repeatedly "don't drop the rotor, don't drop the rotor, don't drop the DAMMIT!" and right into the sand. Oh well.. I guess the bearing had to be replaced anyway.

I passed up so many quick-ratio steering boxes because someone had taken the p/s pump and left the hoses open to the sky (and rain and bugs and dust)...

what im trying to figure out is i can rinse the box with p/s fluid again to try and get the sand out. But if i put it in how bad will some sand mess up my p/s system?

Can't you pop that top silver cover off and then flush the guts?
If he just used compressed air he probably just pushed the sand in further

try putting a hose on the "in" end (dont remember wich hole) that is attached to a contaner filled with p/s fluid and presserizing it with compressed air. that should blow everything out. (and make a big mess- better get the safty goggels )

how thick is the ps fluid, isn't ps fluid the same as hydraulic fluid?

anyway, why not trying a thinner fluid to flush out the sand. like gasoline or turpentine?

There is a silver plate on the top of the steering box, four bolts with an adjustment screw in the center. Hard to miss.
