bought a 350 today... need help identifying heads...

i bought a 350 today from a friend. the casting number is 3932386 which could have made it a 302, 327, or 350 block. dropped the oilpan and found that it has 4 bolt mains. and even better, i found the casting code on the crank 1182 and its a forged 3.48 stroke crank. so its a 300hp 350 truck engine. and its got a standard bore. all this for $100.

anyways, the casting numbers on the heads are 3932454. looked these up online and i get that theyre either 307 heads or 350 truck heads. does anyone know what the specs on these heads are? are they anygood. i know i guy that has a bunch of 462 heads. he'll sell me a pair of bare casts for $125. just wondering if the heads on my engine now are worth reworking or should i just get the 462 heads?

thanks,

nick

The 462's are good performance heads (when ported)
but generally do not have accessory bolt holes in the ends
for alternator etc.

The "60's" performance heads you are looking for are 186,
492,292,041,414,187,126. These have the bolt holes.

You'll have to weight out the true cost of reconditioning
a set of these heads VS an aftermarket head like S/R torquers
or performer rpm heads. Or getting a set of vortecs for your 350.

They need to be checked for cracks before any machining, at any rate.

you will have a hard time mounting your power steering without acc. holes on the 462's...thats what I'm running on my 327.....Not 462's but double humps 482's mine had no bolt holes, but have been "worked" From my research, you would be better off finding a set of L98 heads, They have the accessory holes and flow better than the 462's...just one opinion..forget the heads off the 307.

how much would a machine shop charge to machine a pair of vortecs for larger springs and drill and tap screw in studs?

If you call Summit Racing and tell them what you wanna do, they can sell you the tools so you can do it yourself. All you need is a drill.

I saw an article in Chevy High Performance magazine that showed all the needed tools, as well as cost and part numbers. But they said to call Summit and they've already got them waiting for you.

IIRC, the combined price of the tools is less than $100.

One of the magazines also had a piece about March Pulley developing a bolt on plate setup that would provide the camel hump headed engines with accessory mount holes in the proper place. It would just depend what one cost compared to the other.

All I can remember is that it was in Car Craft or Chevy High Performance or Super Chevy during the last 8 months or so. It was in the section toward that back of the mag, where they have the "New Parts" pages.

Hope that helps.

Thanks f-bird, I guess I did know about these brackets...Summit has the alternator bracket..for ALOT less....The P/S bracket is nice, connects to the long waterpump...the price is a little spendy..$100 for a piece of metal..wish I could get a better look at one to copy...anybody bought these brackets? The remote resevoir idea is appealing...

I searched all my CHP and Car Craft mags last night, to no avail. It must be in Super Chevy or Hot Rod. I don't think it was in Popular Hot Rodding but maybe.

In any event, it seems like you have a pretty good idea for the brackets.
