Question about cams in lo3.

Whats the largest cam i should go with in a lo3? How would this cam work out?

Its a Comp Cam Extreme Energy roller cam.
Grind: 264
Lift: .487''/.495''
RPM Range: 1200-5200

I was thinking about using the lt1 cam but this is larger and new so i might try it. What do you think?

You raise more questions with that question!

What are you attempting to do?

Just put the largest cam in that the engine can run with?

Use the cam with the most lift your stock springs can handle?

Make the most power your 305 can while using your stock springs?

Drag racing only?

Daily driver?

Its gonna be a daily driver. I plan on swapping in better valve springs when i replace my valve seals. Either that or im getting world heads which have a max lift of .560 so that isnt the problem. I just want a good performing cam that will idle and run good. Nothing crazy. What i meant by running the largest cam i can i meant the largest i can run without messing with the computer.

I don't think the TBI computers respond well at all to cam changes

You will probably have to have a custom chip burned but the folks on the TBI board are DEFINITELY the ones to talk to

I suggest the GM HT383 cam. It has all the best specs recommended for a 305; 20x duration on both valves, and less than .450 lift. That should work fine with the stock springs and will give excellent daily driving characteristics. Plus it will have lots of extra hp and torque

Im sure if a little LT1 cam will give an extra 20hp to a lo3 then something just a hair larger will help even more. Im looking to see about 260-270hp with this motor...i think with my intake/world heads/cam I MIGHT be able to see this. After that Im gonna run a 75hp shot of n2o until i can afford a 350 then everythings getting switched over.

I don't see why you won't be running an easy 300 hp with those parts

Then the nitrous ... there won't be many cars you can't beat!

Just go ahead and plan on having to tune the computer. It may run without messing with it, but it won't be running nearly at its best. You could always swap out the TBI for a carb...

I thought about swapping the TBI for carb but I dont really want to. I like fuel injection and i know nothing about carbs so... I know I will need a custom chip for sure. Probably 350 injectors to.

What's the LSA on the cam? The LSA plays the biggest part in how the computer will react to the cam. The higher the LSA, the easier it will be on the computer (when the duration starts to increase, you want the LSA # to increase). I never touched my stock chip, never did any Ultimate TBI mods and I still dont have a AFPR and my car runs just fine....

The GM HT383 cam has a 112* LSA, so it might be just fine as is.

It's a Comp Cams camshaft. It's the bottom of the line cam for TPI engines. I got it from my local speed shop.
