Is it possible for a spark plug to change it's own gap???

I put a set of ac delco r44ts in my car like last Sunday. First I was upset the parts store gave me the 44 instead of the 45, but I did a post and everyone said it wouldn't make much difference. I gapped the plugs at .50, but some people said that was a little much, some said it wasn't. My car didn't seem quite right, so I pulled them to try .45. WHen I pulled them the first couple I pulled were at .50 just like when I put them in. After I pulled a few more, some had closed their gap down to one being about .42 and some others pretty close to that. WTF!! Can a spark plug just close up the gap like that. I have ran about 1 tank of gas (150miles) on them. Anyone ever experienced this. I made sure the gap was correct before I stuck them in, I checked it like 3 times each. I know all of them were at .50.

i'd say it's more likely you were careless the first time you gapped them, or careless the second time you checked them.

Careless on one, OK. Maybe I could have slipped on one, but I am positive I didn't. I could see if it was one plug, you saying I messed it up, but this was like 4 out of 8 that were off. .50 to .42 is just way to big of a difference, a really big difference. I know they were right, I checked them 3 times. I change plugs all the time, I know how to gap them. I'm not pissed or anything, I just know they were right, and somehow changed. Don't want anyone thinking I can't gap a plug. I was just asking if anyone has had this happen to them.

Sometimes you bump them against the head when you are threading them in. .008 isn't a huge bump, could have happened.

Actually we were all over at your house last night and
pulled out a few plugs and messed with then while you were sleeping.... he hehh hee.

Set them at .040" and forget it.

Check your gaps to be sure they are right.
It makes a difference.

ha ha f-bird. Your F'N crazy man!! That's one of the good things about this board, no matter how pissed you are, someone will always make you laugh!! LOL!!! I pulled them all and regapped them at .42, don't ask me why .42, just wanted to try it. I am getting very quick at changing my plugs on my camaro. Which is good, because I got headers on my car and the first time I tried to change them, It took 2 evenings. But then I made
"THE TOOL"(lights gleaming). "THE TOOLl" is the ****!!!! Turned my 2 evening job into like a 30 minute or so job.

Ok, heres what you do to make "THE TOOL". Go out to auto zone or advanced or somethin and get you one of the wrenches that have like the bent ends. You know the ones I am talking about right. It is straight, then right up near the end it like curves in. It will be a double sided one. I think mine was a 5/8 one side and 9/16 the other. Once you get this, go striaght back to the shop and cut it in half. Cut it so it's like 4 inches long or so. It works perfect!!!! There are many versions of the tool, I will see if I can get a digital cam to take a picture of mine. I have also heard of people taking a 5/8 short well socket and hollowing out the end where your wratched should fit( so you can get it overy your plug end. Once you do that then you can just weld a wrench handle to it and there you go. But, mine was quick and easy , and it is the S H I T!! You really have to make one for yourself. Like I said, I think the wrench was like 2.00 at advanced.
