What lube goes where?

My heads should be here today, and i imagine i'll be out there putting them on the minute they show up. I just need to know what kind of lube/sealant i should be putting on what bolts:

Lower head bolts
upper head bolts
Intake bolts
Rocker studs

Also, i dont' put an adhesive like RTv on the head gaskets, only the intake gaskets right?

Thanks
Eric

head and intake bolts require a non-hardening thread sealer

intake needs RTV in the corners

heads get only the gasket

That non-hardening sealant could be LocTite PST or a similar product. All head bolts should have the threads cleaned, then apply an even coating of PST. Teh intake bolts can get the same treatment, especially near the ends where the coolant passages exist.

All other bolts for external accessories should be coated with anti-seize, with the exhausts getting a very liberal coating.

Nothing on head gaskets, I've seen people put rtv on coolant passages of intake gaskets and actually done it myself a couple of times, but I stopped a while ago and there hasn't been a difference. The only rtv I use is for the front and rear of the intake manifold from gasket to gasket across.

i use k&w copper sealer in spray can on the long intake and head gaskets. after taking several engines back apart with the copper sealer the gaskets actually delaminate. sort of like in the old day when the "old timers" used aluminum spray paint on head gaskets, only lot better. of course if your block and heads are disimlar metals i wouldn't use the spray copper sealer, but it works great for iron. i think i'm about the only one using the china wall gaskets, but only if i have the engine on a stand where i can handle the intake easily and see everything.

actually, i used the china wall gaskets when i did my 305 this spring. looked to be pretty beefy as far as gaskets, as they were made of rubber.

i like the rubber gaskets lot better than ultracopper, but there isn't anythnig to hold them in place and they slip around a lot when you set the intake on. if i use the china wall gaskets i coat the china wall and the bottom side of the gasket with high tack and let it set up a bit then put the gasket on. never had a problem, but i have once doing it with the engine in a 67 camaro and couldn't see that it had slipped out and leaked oil. after having to pull the intake to fix the leak i never used the gaskets again with the engine in the car.

O.K. That' makes three of us. I figure that if the factory can get them to seal, so can I. They must have used them for a reason.

thanks for everyones help. I don't plan to use the china wall gaskets simply because i used them when i put the intake on the first time, and the back leaked. i took the intake back off and put gobs of high temp orange RTV and never had to worry about it again.

I always use the permatex copper spray on my head gaskets. I believe it helps them seal and prevents leaks. I've always had good luck with that. I also use hi-temp permatex around the water passages in the front of the intake gaskets, on the intake side.

The intake gaskets I get always come with cork gaskets for the front and rear of the intake. I don't feel right sticking cork inside of my engine, so rtv it is.
