Best Engine for 88 TA GTA

I am working on an 88 TA GTA (t-tops) and would like to get a feel for what the best engine transmission combination would be. I am about a month or two away from getting to the point were I will be getting a new engine and tranny to install.

Two points I am looking for, Best combination for the buck, and just best overall combination without regard to money. I haven't decided if I am ready to go all out or if I want to save that extra money for another project car.

Thanks Brad

ZZ4 crate and T56 would be a great bang for the buck.

Well do you have to pass smog? That will play a roll in the decision of an engine. T-56 is a the tranny I would get though. The ZZ4 is awesome but not smog compliant.

it'd help if you said what you're wanting to do, plus the e check thing, and how you define best

I am restoring the car, not to original specs, but just to be more sound, more horse, a better engine than you could really get back in 88. Same with the Tranny, I want a combination that will work together well, without many modifications having to be done. So the more horse I can get out of it without adding a lot of nitrous, etc. The better.

Right now, I have done the work on the chassis and it is in the garage with nothing attatched to it. The rest of the car is in the other car bay in pieces and I have been replacing old worn out parts, cleaning the ones that still have a life span left in them and am about a month away from being ready to place the engine and transmission on the chassis. I plan on just getting both new and would like to put the best engine (that is compatible) in the car, I don't want to do many modifocations to get it to work.

And I have no Smog requirements

I would suggest then the ZZ4 if smog isn't involved. It is an awesome motor just waiting to shake more hp out of the already 350hp:hail: As for a tranny I really like the T56. It can handle a lot of power and is strong.
