first cam swap completed

i decided about 2 weeks ago it was time to beef up the old ZZ4 350, and I figured the best way to do that would be to swap the bumpstick in it. I used the complete kit by Comp (RPM-2200-5800) duration @.050 230/236 intake 510, exhaust 520. it came with tense dual springs, all new retainers, keepers, and a beefy double roller timing chain. I ordered a set of 1.6 full roller rocker arms by crane cams. I went with a new dual plane higher rise manifold, with an RPM range from 2,000-6,200. needless to say I'm very satisfied with the power/sound output, quality of parts, and incredible instructions included with the kit.

if anyone has any questions, or need any tips with swapping cams while the block is under the hood, please post the questions. I would be glad to help anyone out, ease pain, give tips to anyone who might be experiencing difficulties/problems. I can't say i can answer all questions, but I'll be glad to try.

yeah mark, i cant wait to run it, hopefully i'll have timeslips for the new cam by this coming wednesday. btw, my signature is old, i went to the track a few weeks ago, played with the jetting on the demon and ran a 12.86 @ 106 best on the hoosiers so I'm hoping for mid 12's possibly lower 12's.

Awesome, looks like you spun a bit on that 60' old timeslip.

need some info on rebuilding cast iron heads.

i just wanted to know what size roller rockers, hydraulic roller lifters, push rods, valves, valve springs i should put on my 305 tpi engine? lockers and seals i know.
i want to get a little more horsepower out of my heads but without changing the cam for some more lift and i really dont want to do any type of machine-ing to the heads.
i have a book on high performance camaros by david shelby and it says that if i change the rockers to 1:6 and high lift springs i can get more out of my stock cam if im keeping it. is this possible? im just looking for a little more horsepower. or would it be better to go with both cam and rebuilding heads. oh and throwing in a new edlebrock timing chain?
also wanted to know what tools i need and special ones as well. thank you for any help that you can assist me with and if you have any web sites that can help me threw steps to rebuilding heads or engine parts that would be great too.
i am rebuilding my project iroc-z and yes i am a first time enthuist, so also is it possible to get the offical owners shop manual for the late model camaro's at a dealer ship or somewhere?:hail:

ps. also putting in new performance valves.
thanks

if youre lookin to get more lift out of your 305, l would use a nice set of roller rockers, youll probably need a retainer plate to keep the rockers from pivoting a lot from left to right. you won't need real tense valve springs because you won't get a huge amount of lift, but its an improvement. you may actually be able to use the factory rollers, but if not, go with a nice set of comp rollers. as far as a chain goes, replace it, you can either use a factory replacement, or you could always go for the additional insurance of a double chain. roller rockers will definately allow you to pick up a few extra ponies. from the efficiency of bearings, and the additional lift from the cam. check with the local chevy dealership on the manual, a service manual can be key to solving questions you might have. invest in a good torque wrench, find torque specs on everything, a valve spring compressor, and a balancer puller, you should be set.

Thanks for the offer of support. I'm sure you'll be questioned frequently if anyone uses the SEARCH feature.

Just a couple of questions on the change:

* Where did you time the LCA?

* Why did you choose Crane aluminums over the stroger/lighter Comp forged rockers?

* What kind of idle vacuum are you producing?

* How are the heads set up?

* What other traction/supension changes have been done?

* Are you running at Joliet? (And if so, do they have the plows and salt trucks running yet?)

Just curious.

thanks mousecamaro305.

well i read what you said and i looked up on some specialty tools. i found a nice set 262 piece that comes with engine tools and other goodies and they have the tools you said. $500 bucks from craftsman tools but hey im just a beginner. goin to school on some automotive classes on engines and others.
yeh ill look up the dealership for the manual but in the mean time i have the chilton's book for now. thanks alot!

just an idea thow: i have a 87 iroc-z 305 tpi as you know. i have underdrive pulleys, 52 mm throttle body, msd blaster coil, msd distributor cap and rotor....had msd box 6a but for some reason didnt work, headman headers, 3" cataback flowmaster, all hi-performance suspension, kyb shocks and struts, swaybars, panhard rod,new springs, polyurathane bushings,3.73 gears lower carrier type, rebuilt rear ring and pinion, and all bearings and shims...etc., from front to back suspension stiffness like a solid cyinder-block, nice perfomance tires from summit, airfoil, edlebrock combo siamese runners and intake, hyper tech chip thermomaster type and 160 thermostat, msd 8.5 mm spark plug wires and bosch +4 plugs, b&m shifter and a b&m down-shift kit so trans wont down shift from 4th back to 3rd, and soon the new roller rockes 1:6, valves, pushrods, srpings, roller lifters, and timing chain, oh also 24 lb injectors i have on and fuel regulator and holley fuel pump and new oem lines. also im throwin a supercharger that im savin up for! so what do you think ill do on the quarter mile times....... engine has 120 miles on it and i forgot to throw in the alluminum drive shaft and should i do anymore mods to the tranny because its pointless if the tranny is fully rebuilt....right? i want people to be like that cant be a 305 in that car!!!!!

car is not in use and in garge nice and warm!
hope to put in a pick soon!

I don't see that you have swapped out the L98 alluminum heads that come with the zz4. Did you have any problems with clearance on the pushrods through the pushrod guide holes with the 1.6 rockers?

I'm glad to see such impressive numbers with that motor. I find it hard to beleive when chevy claims a higher horsepower rating on the ZZ4 than on the LS1. The LS1 has much better heads, a similiar cam profile and more compression. I am running a L98 with the 269HR from comp cams so I am hoping for similiar numbers in horsepower but am not convinced I will get them with my factory heads.

Why do you call yourself MouseCamaro305 if you have a ZZ4?
