88 Iroc Running Problems ((Please help im on the edge of buying a mustang ha)

Hello all

I have an 88 Iroc Z-28

305 TPI

THe maf sensor is un plugged, I have checked the Coil, and its getting fire. i have a new fuel pump that is wired to turn on with the key switch, the car has had alot of work and it has 230,000 miles on it...heres the problem

Last year the problem start much like the other guys problem i was reading, the car can start run fine for 20 miles or even 50 then all the sudden Just die. i put it in neutral and rev it sometimes it kicks back on and sometimes it dies. this problem has been never ending it seems. The First time we checked it, the MAF sensor was showing a problem on the computer, we un-plugged it. The MAF sensor was new. It fixxed the problem, but now its doing it again. Crank it up it runs sometimes fine, or you crank it up and it dies. I know running it without the MAF is bad, but it works and frankly i cant see drop 340 on a sensor. So any IDeas or anything would be appreciated. i have a new fuel filter im going to put in it, to see if that helps, but its the inline fuilter. is there another i should change

runs long enough to get good and hot then dies? can you start it up again after it dies? sounds like a failing ignition, check all your ignition components, especially that lil ignition module that likes to take a dump on everyone. Do you still have the coil in cap HEI? make sure that the coil mount is secure and it isnt flopping around. I would start with the basics and trouble shoot it as any other ignition problem.

how hot is the car getting before it shuts off? do you smell a heavy fuel smell, like its extremely rich? Whats it idle like? Have you checked/cleaned the IAC recently?

ya if its running rich it'll act up like that. my injectors just went out. so if I idle or get on it hard it sometimes will die from oall the excess fuel. maybe try running some injector cleaner through it. if they are extremely dirty that could make them not fully close and make you run rich too.

if it is truly grody in there...go to a mercury marine dealer or marine engine dealer and get a can of Mercury PowerTune it's marine quality cleaner for fuel injected motors, great stuff, but its about twice as much as regular cleaner you get at the auto parts store

Normal runnin temp about 180

do you smell a heavy fuel smell, like its extremely rich?
It is running rich but im told its because of the MAF being unplugged

Whats it idle like?
Not to bad it idles normal, now lately its been rough idling right before it shuts down

Have you checked/cleaned the IAC recently?

idling rough like its missing? or like its stumbling/surging looking for an idle?

IAC=IDle Air Control, it controls the idle speed..it is usually plugged into the throttle body on the passenger side, its a 4 prong weatherpak connecter IIRC...pull it if it looks all blackened or corroded, clean or replace it, then reset the ecm again. it still shouldnt keep the car from running, just make it idle really bad
