the horrible 305
the horrible 305
ok heres the deal. maybe some of you rememebr my summer of torture, maybe you dont.
Over the summer i pulled the roasted 305 outta my 84SC, & replaced it w/ a quick swap, an 85 caprice 305. dead straight hookup cause it was identical.
This engine runs but the car is still not drivable. the engine *chugs* a bit & backfires a lot. It runs just well enough to say it runs but put a load on it (put it in gear) and bam... it dies.
So, this all said is there something i need to do to get it going?
If anyone has some ideas im open to em. Im probably just gonna send it to a mechaninc, but if someone can get me the info of what is wrong ill do as much as i can on my own... much much cheaper that way. Thanx guys.

You have a fuel delivery issue. Leave the timing and the EGR alone, and don't rip all the smog stuff of just yet either. The favorite non-tech newbie buzzwords won't help you in this case.
Sounds to me like maybe the carb needs a rebuild in the worst possible way. Well, not the worst possible rebuild, but.... you get the point. Or, if you have both carbs, you could test this by swapping them.
You might want to at least try the fuel filter first, in the fuel inlet nut. Use a 1" wrench to hold the big nut still, and a 5/8" tubing wrench to loosen the nut.
It nay also just need a fuel pump; or if you did anything to the front of the motor like bracket swaps or anything, check the upper bolt that holds on the smog pump bracket, on the pass side of the front of the motor. That bolt goes directly into the fuel pump rod's hole, and if the bolt is too long, it will lock the pump rod in place, or at least severely restrict its motion. Put a short bolt in that place, no longer than 1".

hmm.. time to clarify i guess
lets put it this way.. it runs really really well once you get the revs up past the chugg stage. it idols extremely well too. however the second you hit the gass or give it the load.. it goes to the good ole steam engine setup & hit crawl home mode. get the idea? thanx.

Do a tune up! Worse case scenario you'll have at least solid ground to start working on, and you'll eliminate some possibilities.
But definitely don't just throw a new engine in there b/c of this. Chances are if you can't get this one running you will have similar trouble with another. It's a tempting thought to just start over, but sooner or later the same old problems will crop up and you'll be right here again!!
