Cruise Control Removal

Has anyone removed their cruise control? Mine hasn't worked since 93 and I don't plan on using it at all might as well remove it right?! I am not sure of what all I can remove though. Can anyone help from these pics.

Can you remove that cylinder shaped canister too? It is hooked to the TBI unit. I assume it is a charcoal cannister. Right?

Is this a vacuum canister? Is it needed for just cruise or not? Thanks. This is an under the car shot on drivers side in front of the tire. (opposite side of the batt. but in the same place.) Sorry about the pics they are not too good. cheap camera.

I disconnected the cruise control but left the electrical connections in place so I wouldn't have to think about any possible check engine lights coming up. I disconnected all the vacuum lines from it too.


it is hard to see from the picture, but isn't that the evaporative fuel canister.

Don't know much about this stuff here. I would like to get rid of as much as I can though. Capping the vaccum lines is a must!

Yeah Andy the first pic is the evap canister aka charcoal canister thing...that shouldn't have any bearing with the cruise control. Shame....my Hayne's manual doesn't have a single entry about the vacuum system in the glossary.. Well, the ball under the car..I havent found out what it is..I assumed it was some sort of vacuum reservoir. All it has is one vacuum line feeding it. That considered, I definitely wouldn't mess with it. Couldn't tell you how to remove your cruise control package..if yours is similar to the Hayne's photo for what I assume is a V8 engine...christ, that's complicated. Wires and tubes everywhere. My cruise control box has a cable going into it, one vacuum line, and like one more electrical line, thats all. Mine hasn't worked since I got the car.. The cable is all screwed up...

I'd disconnect and plug all the vacuum lines first..that should have no effect on the system to my knowledge, unless lines run THROUGH the cruise package, in which case you'd have to connect them together with new line. But yeah, do it kinda sequentially so you'll know what doing this did to that, ya know... Don't see why disconnecting the pack would throw a Check Engine light..I dont recall there being any sort of light for the cruise control system, but I could be wrong.

No I don't think there is any light for the cruise system either otherwise it would of probably come on in mine long ago, The vaccum lines are the only thing I can think of that would bother anything. All the electrical lines should be for the controls on the steering column right? I would think so but not sure.

I believe some run to the steering column ****, and some others go down to some sort of package underneath the car...but don't quote me on that..that might only be on the manuals.

Yeah didn't think about the tranny. Surely that would have wires going to it. I guess this will be another experimental thing.

Yep...I remember reading the pack is near the Torque Converter Clutch pack I think..

heh, got any idea what the computer chip looking things are/do that are mounted to the firewall behind the fender on the driver's side to outside of the power brake booster? i removed those when i removed all that other bull**** from my engine bay...i'm kinda curious

Not me, no idea. The wiring stuff I tend to leave alone because most of the time I don't know where it goes. If you find out let me know that is one more thing I can get rid of.

Computer chip looking things? Ya got me! Couldn't say..but then again, I have a V6 engine..I'm not too familiar with the 8's, especially the carbed ones.

I pulled mine out, I'm carbed though... I just pulled it all out .. and the charcoal cannister too... I plugged up that line; to pull out the cruise its like 2 or 3 bolts I think... the linkage to the carb then the vaccuum line.

I removed my cruise completely,electronics and vacuum, it wont throw any computer codes. Basically, follow the wires back through the firewall.... the wires will connect somewhere, you can just cut them or disconnect them, i think theres a conncetor on the inside., and the vacuum line goes to the brake, just pull that off, the ball looking thing can go too. and basically everyting connected to the cruise control module can go.

yea, one thing is that my car is carbed, but i really dont think that has much to do with anything in that the only thing that connects to the engine is the cable, so you should be good.
