xe274 and Vortec Heads

You Guys think they would work well together on a 400 SBC? I want a slightly lopey idle, 400+ HP, and 450+ torque. Thanks in advance!

Yes that would make a good street machine package.

Would need a bit o' gear and converter but other than that
easy to live with and lots o' power.

Be sure to do the proper upgrades to the valvetrain to get the best out of the Comp XE cam.

If you have any questions, Comp Cams has a free tech line.
Give them a call or e-mail.

Yes that combo would run great.

It will also require machining the heads for larger springs, and cutting the valve guides down so that the retainers don't hit them.

Given that, it should work fine.

Do not even begin to hallucinate that you can use the weenie truck replacement valve springs that come on those heads with that cam. Those heads do not come set up as a performance head from the factory, they are a replacement trcukc service part, and as such, require complete prep from ground zero to be used with a cam that big.

That cam will be good. Actually it won't lope I bet. Does slightly on my 383 but not much.

Car Craft put together a 440 horsepower package with the Vortec Heads, XE 274, and a 350 small block.

Thanks for the replys guys.

Aaron91RS - do you think I could get away with the xe 284? 400's make alot of torque and id be willing to give up alittle for somemore HP. Ehhh... I'd probably be happier w/ the 274 streetwise... I just want that killer idle!! Id hate to rev it up real high though...

BillZ28 - you have to tell me what issue that was!

The car the engine is going into will have a 4-speed and 3.42 gears.

I summarized the Hotrod Vortec headed 383 buildup in this thread. Check it out: https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...&highlight=383

They ran the XE282 hydraulic roller and got 463hp and 500 ft-lbs with a 383 with the Vortecs after some tweaking.
