Could be your universal joint on the driveshaft or you could have excessive backlash in your ring & pinion gear. I had the same problem and my mechanic replaced my universal joints. Cost about $150.00 with parts.

If you mean that it clunks everytime it shifts from 1st to 2nd, and 2nd to 3rd, etc. (and it's an auto, which you didn't say) then it could be the tranny mount.

I've had mine break and the whole car shifted to one side everytime I accelerated. Kind of annoying.

Mine also made a clunk under hard shifting. After alot of searching, it turned out that the tranny mount at the rear of the trans was bad. It would let the trans flop around under power. Just an idea.

its a automatic, and i replaced the tranny mount allready its not that, and it doesnt seem to do it when the cars is shifting 1, 2,3,4 but i hear it when i put it in a gear for example-from park to reverse or into drive, it also clunks when it downshifts as i slow down.

Clunking when going from park to drive to reverse, etc. definitely sounds like u-joints - make damn sure on the u-joints - I seen someone do the pole-vault thing at about 30mph and it wasn't funny! After seeing that car do that flip - I'm definitely in the market for a driveshaft loop!

clunking

mine does that smae things. When ever i put her into reverse. She's an automatic. How much does it cost to get the universal joint fixed in an 86 firebird?

u-joints are not very expensive pieces. The key to getting them out is melting the inpregnated junk the factory has injected inside them with a torch. once you get them hot enough that you see this stuff melting out you can wack them out with a socket you don't need anymore and a hammer. I broke a vise trying to get mine out before I found out about the stuff they inpregante them with. But I think they are less than 20 bucks.

i had a similar problem...turned out to be a tranny mount. Mine only clunked when i shifted from park to first or from first to second.
