If it's a roller cam, then yes, regular motor oil is fine.

I guess that depends on what you consider "worth the trouble"...

It is said ny those who have done it, that the LT1 cam wakes up a mostly stock L03 pretty good. That, plus a decent exhaust, plus some better heads such as LB9 heads, ought to put one of them up into the 225-230 HP range; more if the heads are ported and some better intake is used.

ok while dumping a quart of oil on the lifters etc etc to ensure that no water was in there, i poured half a tea spoon of oil in the intake and exhaust port on the head....will this cause damage?? or just smoke for about a min???? .....in any event...i have 3 inch pipes, gutted cat, and headers....so will the cam make a noticable gain --seat of the pants gain..

No the oil won't hurt, at least not anything except your ego if some fabulous babe you'd like to meet happend to be watching.

You'll probably notice a significanlt difference.

ok cool...thanks for the help so far EVERYONE seriously....ive made some clumsy mistakes so far but its all in learning i supose....that and no one i know is into this kinda thing, so im seriously doing this on my own and just poking around...so yeah....anyways, new cam is in, timing chain on, lifters in, push rods in and half the valves back on....all with the "twizzle" everyone specified... a lil resistance when i try to spin the push rods but they still spin freely....hope this is right....i dont know how tight to adjust the lifters that are raised though...any ideas? anyone???

For hydraulic lifters you tighten to zero lash and then 1/4 turn more to set the correct preload.

For lifters that are raised, you can't adjust them.... turn the engine until they're all the way down, then adjust those.

Yes, wiggle the pushrod around while you tighten the nut and when it stops wiggling go another 1/4 turn.

You gotta cut the "ears" back on the chain cover on the inside lip a little, from what I've been told. Haven't tried it yet, though.

Slowmaro, I usually loosen the bolts up on the oil pan to drop it down enough so that you can get the cover back over the gasket. HTH. Good luck.

ok i cut the lip a lil, and with some agression and force and both feet and hands pushing on top and bottom it popped in, ...used alot of sealant just to be sure of no leaks....my bigger problem was the damn balancer.....NO ONE had a installer too nor a 7/16 20 thread in a 50 mile radius.....grabbed sole oil, a wood block and a hammer whacked it on there about a half inch, ...stuck some washers n the crak bolt, ...whacked, tightened, whacked...so forth til it was 1/4 inch til it wouldnt move anymore and just tightened the rest of the way....took me a damn day to get it on though....pully now on, ..next is the water pump, belt, radiator, ..oil plug *lol* then crank it, adjust the valves...and off i go...i HOPE...lmao...

Cam swaps suck. I hate doing them. Im about to do a head and cam swap on my 350. That should be fun. Ive already decided I'm pulling the motor to do it. I think it would be worlds easier that way. I want to go ahead and add a high volume oil pump and all that good stuff. May hit the heads and block up with a coat of chevy orange.
