I put one of those crank scrapers on my engine when I went through it last week and now my oilpan won't seal. I have used RTV silicone to make up for the extra clearance on the other side but it pours out of the oil pan onto the starter. I plan to take it off and throw it in the trash can.
Will I have to jack the engine up to get the oilpan off?

I didn't use two gaskets. I just used RTV on one side of the scraper. I put a bead on the other side of the oil pan to make it seal. I have it fixed now. I just put on a one piece gasket and said forget the scraper. I didn't have any luck with it.

Axle/Gears: good guess
It's usually made of a thin peice of shhetmetal. It's purpose is to scrape oil off of the crank at high RPM. It usually frees up some HP by cutting down on recip. weight caused by the oil clinging to the crank.

It's exactly what raggedout said; a thin piece of sheetmetal cut out to conform to the shape of the crank. When the crank spins, it picks up oil. When it spins really fast, all that oil is clinging to the crank and whipping around in the pan - think of having a "splash fight" with someone in a pool. The crank scraper comes close to the crank and keeps oil from getting flung around- think of a squeegee on a window.
You can make them yourself with metal snips. They bolt to the oil pan flange (drill your own holes), and that's why 94-6spd had trouble getting a leak-free seal.
I'm sure you can do a http://www.google.com search for "crank scraper" to see pictures.
