car dying when braking

When my car gets down to about a quarter of a tank of gas and I brake hard coming to a stop sign or light my car dies. what are some of the reasons this could be happening?

Is your gas gauge off a little? Are you sure it only does it when it;s below a 1/4 tank?

The same thing keeps happening to me. It stalls out, and it takes about 10 tries to start again, really pissing off the people behind me. I don't think it has anything to do with the gas gauge, because I replaced the air filter and breather and the problem was solved. The low speed just wasn't pushing enough air in through a dirty filter to keep the engine going. So, check your air filter and breather, and possibly fuel filter.

well I replaced the air filter with a k and n. I have also just changed the fuel filter. The gas gauge could be off a little it varies between 1/4 of a tank to empty when braking. It starts right up again after it dies. could this problem also be the reason for hesitation of the line?

Yup, I'd guess you're getting fuel starvation. What happens under heavy acceleration and/or braking is that the fuel runs away from the pickup. Normally it does it when the fuel level is lower, though, so it's possible the pickup may have come off your intank pump.

so this could be the reason for the hesitation. how much would that cost to fix? my tank is cut into from the top thanx previous owner.

If the tank is already cut from the top, it shouldn't be hard. Just pull the sending unit and fuel pump out and make sure the sock like thing is still hanging off the end. If it is, you might have an inaccurate gauge that tells you you've still got 1/4 tank when you may be as low as 1/8.

The previous owner of my car changed the sending unit. but he ducked taped it in the tank. I had that fixed about 3 months ago. I asked the guy that fixed if the fuel pump was working properly and he said yes. My gas gauge does move al over the place when i brake, accel, or corner hard. Also when i fill the tank up the gauge reads a little above the full mark.

What kind of Motor is in it? What type of fuel delivery? We need some facts about the car first.

I'm guessing TBI or Carb. If the Gauge moves around when you brake, then that should mean there is enough fuel in the tank to prevent starvation, but who knows. Give us some more info then lets go from there.

If it's an RS and still has the factory motor, it's either a TBI 305 or MPFI 2.8.
