86 Berlinetta starter replacement

Hi

the starter is dead.

I need to get the old one off and use it as a core charge.

Anyone got any diagrams or instructions on how to take the old one off, and pout the new one on?

What motor?

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery.
2. Unbolt the old starter.
3. Re-bolt the new starter.
4. Reconnect battery cable.

Details on the unbolt and re-bolt part would depend on which motor you have.

Well not much more to say about that... 2 bolts from underneath that hold it to the block, maybe one nut still there that holds it to a bracket at the end of the starter motor toward the front of the car. 2 terminals with wires on them; one big terminal, one little one. You'll probably have to turn the starter with its nose pointed down to get it around the exhaust pipe.

No Berlinettas came with the HO motor (L69). It's the LG4 base-model 305, unless somebody has changed it. Which is probably a good thing for you in this case; the HO cars have a far larger exhaust pipe, which makes it even more fun to get the starter out of the car once the bolts are out.

Yes you have to jack the car up. It is on the passenger side, on the bottom of the engine (under the exhaust manifolds) right by the flywheel. There is one bracket holding the nose of the starter to the block and two 9/16in (probably) bolts holding it onto the block. You amy have to disconnect the Y-pipe from the exhaust manifolds to slkip the starter out once you unbolt it.

BTW How much do they give you for a starter core when you go to trade it in, and at which store?

Thanks for the informatrion.

I think the starter is 70$ but with the core its 49$.

We think its the battery. He explain it to me. Sounds like he needs a new biger battery. Will keep you posted.

(It showed no symptonms on the the start going to hell)
