Starting Trouble - Please Help!!!!
Alright guys, I have an 89 IROC 350TPI and I've owned my car for a year now and I've replaced just about every part on the car for one reason or another and one problem has remained constant through all of it....starting my car.
Every morning, my car starts like a champ..fires right up. Well, any other time I try to start it during the day...it takes a few seconds of the starter running before it decides to fire up. Most times I also have to give it some gas for it to fire up. It's not heat soak cause it will start every single time without fail, it just takes longer to start. Many times when it takes longer to start, I will get a puff of white smoke from the exhaust that I do not get when it fires right up without hesitation.
Oil leak down possibly? Heck if I know....I need some ideas. This sucks and I've been trying to fix it for a year now and I can;t find anyone who has ever had this problem

Starter?
Ignition Coil?
Any ideas guys? Those are about the only two parts I have not replaced since I got the car.

control modules fail under heat, but it's not logical to think it would be that. try trouble shooting the ignition and make sure the tune up is good. filters not clogged and no preasure leaks in fuel system

Hmm, well, the ECM is new as well as the fuel pump and neither of these made any sort of change in the starting problem whatsoever.
The fuel pressue idea seems possible. Could this be something caused by a bad gas cap or missing O-rings in the fuel line connections on the front of the manifold?

White smoke? That is usually water. It could be possible that you have a small leak in a head gasket or something. Not enough to keep the car from running, but enough to keep it from starting easily.

Yeah, I replaced the intake manifold gasket trying to get rid of some of the smoked and it worked a little. I was also hoping that it might take care of the starting problem as well, but it looks like it might be the heads.

I agree with the water in the cylinders problem. That little water will dilute the fuel and make the hard start situation. It will happen when the car has been run because the system builds the pressure and then makes the head gaskets seep. Check your spark plugs and see if one is cleaner than the others. This may indicate the cylinder the water is getting into.

I'm going to have to agree with you guys about the water getting into the heads. I know I'm also buring a little oil as well. I rekon the best way to get rid of all these problems is to just get a good set of new performance heads and put them on. New gaskets and all that stuff of course. Does that sound about right?
