Is X-fire That Bad?

I am asking because I was looking at a 1984 Vette for a good price. I know the computer was replaced not too long ago. Thanks for the info

No, it's not that bad. I'm not sure just how bad "that bad" is, but however bad it might be, X-fire is actually worse.

My 83 HO Z28 would absolutely smoke those Vettes. They were a disgrace to a fine heritage. After the ones from the late 70s and early 80s with 165 HP 350s, we all figured the Vette was done for as a performance car. Everybody had already come to the conclusion that it would just be eye candy with no teeth. The 84, while a very cool-looking ride, was pathetically slow, to the point where if it had been anything but a Vette it would have been humorous.

IMHO the 84 Vette is useless except as a historical curiosity.

There are 2 kinds of cross-fire cars ...

Ones that run good and ones that run bad.

I've had x-fire cars and I work on them (a couple of my customers have them).

Of the three that I can talk about..they get with the program.

Now I know that MOST suck. But there are good ones around.

In the early 80's can't you just see some car salesman saying."Watch it kid! That Vettes about to CrossFire!!!"

CrossFire is even worse than TBI for performance. So how bad is it? Pretty bad. I think the 1/4 mile times for the CrossFire cars were high 15's and low 16's.

They can be a very good motor depending on what you plan on doing with it. In stock form, it's somewhere in the 16's. It is still a chevy V8, so headers and a good exhaust will tremendously benefit it. It will also respond well to heads and a minor cam change, and a set of rear end gears. The problem comes with the TBI's. Once you reach the flow capabilities of them, that's it, there are no larger ones availible. The intake manifold is pretty restrictive too. Also, I'm not sure if anyone can burn a custom chip for that motor, but if you only go a little bigger on the cam, a change in fuel pressure will compensate.(You may have to fabricate and adjustable regulator.) So Cross-fire is not that bad if you just want a nice street cruser that will do 14's. If you want more, it won't happen.

Brian hold out till you can get a TPI Vette. THey will come around sometime. Hey besides we already know what to do with a TPI so why start over with a high milage X-fire that we like to make fun of. Remember the X-fire cars are the ones not worth that much.

------------------
86 Trans Am 355 TPI Rebuilt 700R4 with Corvette servo, modified valve body, and a B&M Torque Converter (2000 rpm stall w/ lock up), 87 350 block bored .30 with new crank, bearings, rings, and magnafluxed rods. Reworked 305 heads with 3-angle valve job. Added in the rebuild was an SLP TPI cam, BBK 58mm Throttle Body,SVO 24# injectors,MSD 6A, Hypertech Power Coil, 1.5 Crane roller tipped rocker arms, SLP Intake Runners and Port matching in upper intake including fully ported plenum, TPIS adjustable fuel pressure regulator @ 46psi, Hooker shorty style headers w/ Thermotech heat wrapping, Custom 3” exhaust with Flowmaster muffler and chrome quad tips, Hypertech Thermomaster Computer chip, K&N open element cone filter on modified MAF per TPIS specs, MSD Wires, removal of A/C hardware and a 1LE firewall cover installed. Also there has been a PST front suspension kit with Hotchkis strut tower brace

Car: Turbo Buick
Engine: 3.8 V6
the crossfire TB's can be bored to 2" easily
ther are also alot of tricks that can be done to the manifold. In stock form, the crossfire combo cars sucked no doubt, but there is plenty of room for improvement. There are more than a few crossfire cars running around with 350+ hp

I thought the Cross-Fire Vettes had high 14sec 1/4 miles times with 0-60s in about 6.8sec. At least according to MotorTrend and Car&Driver back in 1984. I know the L83 wasn't the greatest engine of all time, but it sure gave you a pretty good shove in the back with a heavy right foot. A family member bought one new back in '84 with the Z51 package. From what I can remember, it sure felt purdy darn quick.
