Can't help ya with where to cut the hole, but am curious if you actually do save time?
I'm thinking...
Remove backseat, carpet, cut a hole, then reinstall and seal the "plate" you cut out, then the carpet and seat again. Maybe you just need to lay the seat forward? I dunno.
I guess if you don't have jackstands and handtools I could see your point.
Good luck...get ready for the thread

I can try to get you some pics of my hole. I recently cut one for mine since I blew out the little rubber hose connecting the sending unit to the pump. my recomendaion is get a set of good (read high) jackstands and do it right. You'll have to remove the exhaust, and the heat sheids. You can get away with dropping the axle but leave the front bolt on the control arms in. you'll also need to disconnect the panhard rod from the frame. The additional brace by the panhard rod needs to come out also. Use some heat on the single bolt and it should come oout no problem. Un bolt all the little stuff around the filler neck as you'll need to move that around. You'll also want to pull out the inner fender on the drivers rear also. Then it's just a matter or twisting the gas tank until it falls out. It's a lot easier than it sounds. If you do cut the hole you still need to unbolt the tank and pray it sits low enough to get the sending unit out easily. I ended up ****ing up my sending unit and now I don't have a gas gauge, so it's smarter to do it the long way. If you have a little knowledge of the rearend and how everything sits you should be ok. Let us know how it goes though.

I started to do that, as I drilled several holes I noticed how close the fuel lines are to the sheet metal. It looked like the tank must be dropped, even if it rests on the panhard rod brace, maybe 1" or 2" to have clearance for the saw. It turned out not to be the fuel pump. good luck

DONT cut a hole. it not safe and will take just as long. It will never be right when its done. if you say you dont have the tim eor resources to do it right then how do yo uhave them to do the hole? You need a drill, cutoff wheel, compressor, hand tools and a welder. if you have those then you must have a jackstands and a bunch of sockets and a rachet. Its not hard at all to drop the tank........the last thing you want to do is be cutting near the fuel lines
