Does the temp gauge work normally otherwise? Is the engine in fact running hot?

You mean as soon as you turn on the A/C switch, the needle buries?

Or..

While driving with the A/C on, the needle climbs and buries?

Your gauge sending unit is on the driver sdie head, between (and below) #1 and #3 plugs...may want to pull the connector and do some continuity check to ground...really seems like yuou have a wiring fubar somewhere...should be no relation to the gauge and A/C switch.

May not be a bad idea to check the ground from the firewall to the pass head, smallish braided ground strap. In fact, check all the grounds too behind the head, just for grins.

Sounds like you have a mis-wired car.... somebody hooked all the dark green wires under the hood together.... the green wire that goes to the fan switch (in the pass head) and the ECM to turn on the fan, is cross-connected with the green wire that should go to the temp gauge sender (in the driver's side head)
