There's no such thing as "Formula HO". The HO motor was discontinued in these cars before the Formula was revived in this generation of F cars.
Get a casting number. That cuts right through all the BS and drivel and mis-identification, and gets straight to the reality of what they really are.
You need casting number 081. They came on 305 TPI motors (which are not "HO" motors), and the HO motors in 87 Monte Carlo SS.

There was no "HO" motor in 87 in a Formula. People call just about everything a "HO" these days, just like they call things "police interceptor" or "from a Vette". It is usually meaningless BS buzzwords used for the sole specific purpose of making inexperienced and uninformed people think that something ordinary is actually something special, even when it's not.
In 87 there was the TPI motor, which is a roller motor; and there was also the LG4 carb motor, which is also roller. Both of those would have come with the 081 heads. Neither of them was the "HO", because the last year of the motor that [i]was[/b] actually called the "HO" by GM, was 86.

i know this may be non thirdgen tech but i'm still going to ask.
rb, when you say gm last produced a h.o. engine in 1986, are you referring to strictly the f-body? or is that for all gm cars?
not disputing you, but also trying to make sure the information i've heard and seen is accurate.
monte carlo ss models got the h.o. through 1988, correct?

Yes, that is correct. The L69 continued to exist AFAIK until the end of the MC SS. I know for cetain that it existed, because my late little brother's car (that he died in) had one. It was discontinued in these cars after 86.
081 is definitely not swirl-port.

so you have the corvette lower? with the egr tube? and you are sure the distributor cover was aluminum from the factory on your car? and the fuel lines enter on the pass side?

dude my car came stock with the corvette tuned port injection on my 305 iroc!!
I forgot to mention, my little bro's MC SS was a 87.
The 081s have 1.84"/1.5" valves and 58cc chambers, and no swirlies. The ones you want to avoid are the ones you should have on your TBI motor, which are 187s IIRC.
