you dont get experience from reading the boards man .........of course we mod our cars. I should be around the 350#, but who knows for sure. there are a lot of techs and guy with cars much faster than mine on these boards who have got their hands very dirty and crawled out from under their cars to show us the light.

I just read in the most recent issue of High Performance Pontiac of this guy who has over 600 HP in his 84 Trans Am. It apparently has a supercharged 406 Chevy AND he has a 225HP bottle in case that isn't enough... overkill??? Just enough...

I don't know exactly, it's alot though. I would think easily over 400 at the crank. It can toast Mustangs rather brutally.

400 with double-hump heads, 10.4:1 CR, 282 roller cam, 800 CFM carb, & a few other details

I read so many messages about people who want 500+hp cars. The first question I ask is "Have you ever driven a car with 500+hp?" Typical street cars perform very well with less than 350hp. I'm not talking about cars with blowers or NOS but straight engine hp. An engine will perform very well at the 1HP/CID level. Most are well below that. The ones that are higher will cost a lot more and usually cost more to operate and maintain.

Building a 500hp engine isn't that hard but don't forget the rest of the car needs to be modified. The suspension and driveline also has to handle all that extra power.

It also depends on where the engine produces all that power. Creating 500hp at 6500 rpm doesn't do a street engine any good when it rarely gets above 4000 rpm.

I'm trying to hit 450 horse with my new engine. The list of goodies are in my signature. I know it might be overkill for the street, but you're only young once!! Plus you never know who might be willing to sponsor you down at the local track.

The Malibu's got right around the 500 mark on the bottle. Probably only about 350 on the motor. On the nitrous it's difficult to describe becuase I'm used to it and I don't even feel the acceleration anymore- I'm just going about my business of keeping the car in a stright line.

But when I first put the nitrous on and ripped off a high 11 on street tires it felt like I had strapped a rocket to the back of the car! Even ZR-1 Vettes and early model Vipers would fade QUICKLY into the rearview. I did NO suspension mods other than an aribag in the right rear spring. I do not run slicks just to preserve the driveshaft and rear end.

Serious giggle factor.

79 Malibu "beater" w/junkyard 400 SBC, tweaked QJet 4bbl, finally a decent set of heads, a few other tricks. A maddening 13.000001 @ 108 on the motor with little traction. No nitrous runs with the new heads yet.
Grandma's old 78 Malibu (33K miles!) soon to have the powertrain from the 79 put in it.

456HP@ 5400rpm
477TQ@ 4500rpm
Before my 150 of NOS coming in febuary

I did quite a few chasis mods and got some 17x11 ZR-1's in the rear with 325 Dunlop SP8000's for the positive traction to HP ratio.

If our going to shoot for high HP take some time and make sure you read the tech articles and pay attention to everybody in here so you can begin to know your car better.

I only knew about car audio before thirdgen.org and now I'll be runnin with the vipers.

355 CID, TRW 11:1, N.A. POS Holley 850 C26827, 2.02/1.60 valves, home-ported cast 327 heads, GM HEI dist, Accel coil, Crane .474/.474-222/222 cam, 1.6:1 rockers, stud girdles (yeah, I'm a chicken-****), Cloyes double roller, nodular crank undercut/rolled/gun-drilled oil passages, GM steel con-rods, Edelbrock Performer, Cyclone 1-5/8" plain steel tube modified length headers, lightened flywheel, 423BHP @ 5,800 RPM on an ancient electrodynamic engine dynamomneter.

Nothing really radical except for a bit higher compression ratio on the iron heads. The actual static compression is only in the area of 10.8:1 since the chambers are a little larger than stock. Not much good under 3,000 RPM, though.
