5 Seconds of Cranking!!!

Okay I did a seach on this topic and now im a little confused.. so maybe if I get some direct answers it will help me out.

Problem: After an hour of letting the car sit. I go back to start it up and I have to crank it over for about 5 seconds before it starts.

What I know: The timing is fine and the fuel pressure is fine.

Does anybody have any ideas of what the problem could be.

Thanks

I can't offer a solution. You're lucky it only takes you near 5 seconds. I put in some SVO 19lb-ers and now it takes me 15 seconds to get it to start from a day's sit. What injectors are you running?

i'd suspect something in the fuel delivery system. i'd start trouble shooting, check preasure and such. make sure regulator is good

When I start burning proms I'm gonna try to boost my cranking fuel and see if that helps.....I mean they ARE rated lower, although at GM psi it's near 21lb/hr, which is not too much difference.

I think I'm going to replace the fuel pump anyway, just so I know it's solid. Be a good chance to clean the tank, too.

You say you checked fuel pressure. How extensively? Did you prime the car once after an hour and see what pressure it primes to? Maybe it's priming insufficiently. Although you dont mention this happening on a cold engine so I doubt that's a likely possibility. Also did you kill the car and watch the gauge to make sure you're not leaking out the injectors and flooding?

I dont have a problem with a cold start. I do have fuel pressure after shut off for about 25 minutes.

So there isn't any pressure leakdown right? Dont know what to tell ya. Excessive cranking is either fuel or ignition....and it definitely sounds like fuel to me. I assume the car runs just fine after it starts up.... If not, ignition might be the culprit then since we've mostly eliminated fuel....

How are your spark plugs? I had a problem like this on my car (although carbed), and the plugs had fouled. Put new ones in and the car was happy as.

Hope that helps

This is probably not your problem, but.....

My balancer slipped and I had mistakenly set my timing about 30 degrees off (crazy, I know!) Anyways, I replaced the balancer and set the timing right. Not only does she crank easily, but the power is BACK!

Might want to take the Ign. module out and get it checked. Might be soaking up heat after shut down.

Could be a weak battery. You can be surprised how much faster a fresh (and good) battery will start your car.

Have U tried letting the pump run till it stops and then crank the motor? Only other thing I can think of is your watch is running too fast!

When it happened in my Vette, I changed the fuel pump, fuel filter, some sensors, but nothing worked. I was thinking fuel injectors, but then I thought, thats a lot of work. Then I remembered holding off on doing the fuel pressure regulator because I couldn't get the part, so I got it, changed it in a few minutes, and it worked perfectly!

Try it, its really easy, and not as expensive as other things, like fuel pump and injectors.

My 89 t/a w/ TBI does the same thing when it sits over night. I have to cycle the key or try to start it a few times before it starts. After it starts in the morning it normally doesn't do it anymore.

I'll second the chance on it being a weak battery.

Something similar happened to me with what you're describing. I found it to be the stock injectors leaking, then when it would finally fire that nasty big puff of smoke would shoot out the back. I don't think it was 5 seconds, more like 3. Still, something to consider.

Q: Why is my car getting harder to start day by day?

A: Before you go spending big bucks on a new starter or fuel pump. Check the The fuel pump relay. It could be dying and you might be able to save a large sum of money. On most F-Bodies these relays are located in the extreme rear-driver's side corner of the engine compartment behind the brake booster.
