remote start and manual trans

my friend's roomate has a maxima with a stick in it. he also has a remote start unit he wants to put in. does anyone know if these units will bypass the starter cutout from the clutch pedal? are there any other problems you guys can think of, aside from leaving it in neutral when you prak all the time...any other help/suggestions will be appreciated. thanks

You could place a jumper wire in the Clutch switch and the remote starter will work, but I don't reccomend it, it's just too risky, what if you leave the car in gear on accident?

The best way to do it would be to have a relay open (or ground depending on how it's set up) the clutch pedal switch when the remote start module engages. The power supply should come from another relay that only closes when the car is in nuetral. So you'd have to find the nuetral sense, and clutch switch wires, and test them to see if they ground out or need power, but it shouldn't be too hard.

If I didn't explain that very well e-mail me and I'll try and do a better job.

I would find out if it is legal. I know I tried to have that done and like Macgyver said if you leave it in gear you are asking for it. The people that were going to install it where my friends and they still wouldnt do it.

Well, my two best friends have remote starts...they both have standard shifts (93 and 97 Mustang)...and both cars have front end damage. So you figure it out.

The guy with the '93 was having a party...let a friend borrow the car to go get some girls or whatever. Next morning, he remote starts it, hears some funny crashing sounds, and finds the car in his backyard.

The one with the '97 was at work and let a co-worker borrow the car. After work, he remote started it, and came out to the parking lot to find it smashed into the side of a Civic.

At a towing company I used to work at, one of the drivers was trying to move an impounded Celica out of the way, to get to the car behind it. He was having trouble figuring out the car alarm, pressed the wrong button...the car remote started and crashed into the stinger of the tow truck.

The moral of the story is that if you do put a remote start on your car, don't let people borrow it, because they'll always leave it in gear by mistake, even if you remind them.

On top of the clutch pedal is the clutch safety switch, and it has two wires on it. Just splice the two wires together. If you don't want to cut the wires, I think you can unplug the switch and a fuse will fit right into the plug.

Also, keep in mind that even with the key, your car can start in any gear. (My car does this too, because it had a remote start in it before I got it.)

It would be a wise idea to tie the remote starter into the parking brake lamp circuit, so it won't start if the brake's been left off. But the car can usually still move with the brake on anyway.

Clifford made a remote start for standard shift cars. It required you to perform a certain sequence of tasks when you parked the car, to "prove" to the remote start that you have indeed left the car in neutral prior to getting out. If you didn't perform those tasks, the car wouldn't remote start the next morning. But now Clifford's been bought out or something, so I don't know if they still make it.

Even after all my friends' troubles, I think I would still put a remote starter in my car if I really wanted one. You just have to be very careful, and don't let anyone else use your car.

Just make sure it's not a Clifford unit. The clifford remote start units use the tach sensing wire and monitors the rpm patterns. Believe it or not, the clifford unit will KNOW whether or not it's connected to a manual or automatic, and will lock itself if it senses a manual. You'll have to pay to remove it, and pay Clifford (now DEI) $50 to unlock it).

You can also put the relay on the clutch switch discussed above and then put one on the e-brake. Normally, your e-brake grounds a switch when pulled. If this is not the case, (IE: the e-brake is not pulled) the alarm will not start the car. Thats what I did.
